Obituary — June 14, 2017 - Sequim Gazette

Monday, June 19, 2017

B.C., where the Canadian Immigration authorities rejected them. It was a “very fortunate” episode because they discovered Sequim. The warm and wonderful reception and hospitality that they experienced at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church played a large part in their decision to make Sequim their home. They purchased a house built in 1976 in the beautiful Sunland Community, and Carolyn lovingly remodeled and redecorated it into their “perfect home.”Carolyn Marie was a truly generous and loving person and a fervent practicing Christian. Among her activities and accomplishments was participating as a server in Christian soup kitchens in Seattle and Wisconsin, functioning as a foster parent, being a coordinating member of the Square Dance community of the Olympic Peninsula; and she was also an avid supporter of the Boys & Girls Club, the Habitat for Humanity, the Sequim Food Bank, and the Community Foundation of Sequim Dungeness Valley.Carolyn functioned as the Chairperson of the Sunland Golf and Country Club’s Social Committee for two years. She was a member of NAMI (National Association for Mental Illness), and a major contributor to the Clallam County VeteranÕs Standdowns. She was an involved member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, and along with a group of other dedicated women in the church, they produced well over a thousand prayer quilts for wounded military veterans across Washington state; as well as, prayer quilts for ill members of the church and their families, neighbors, and friends.Carolyn always had a warm smile, a kind word, and a caring heart and hand for everyone that she encountered. She will forever be cherished and loved by those she left behind. Besides her devoted husband, Richard, she is survived by her brother Gary Riese and his wife Michel of Parrish, Florida; her sister Janice Dierdorff and her husband Terry of Olympia, Washington, also by her four children: Mark Maciejewski and his wife Donna of Issaquah, Washington, John-Paul Maciejewski and his wife Rochelle of Tampa, Florida; Teresa Rose Schultz and her husband Ryan of Wassau, Wisconsin; and Michael of Iola, Wisconsin; and a total of 5 grandchildren. As well, by her step-daughter, Karie Hempel and her husband Brian Bump; and her step-son Greg Hempel and his wife Rochelle Gurusinghe. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to a charity of your choice.A Memorial Service will be held at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth Ave, in Sequim, Washington on Friday, June 23rd, 2017 at 4 p.m. Her earthly remains will be interred in the Church Columbium. Carolyn’s beautiful soul has moved on to the joy of eternal life with her Savior, Jesus Christ, with God the Father, and with the heavenly host of Saints and Angels.Don MonsonDonald Edward Monson, age 93, died June 5, 2017 at the Washington VeteranÕs Home in Port Orchard, WA.A native of Fargo, ND, Don was the son of Gustaf and Tillie (Wiese) Monson.Don graduated Fargo Central High School in 1942 and enlisted in the US Army in 1943. He served as a gunner in the Army Air Force in an A-20 attack aircraft. He was assigned to duty in New Guinea and the Philippines and barely survived when an anti-aircraft shell exploded aboard his plane, killing his fellow gunner. He served for the duration of WWII and was honorably discharged in 1946.After the war, he enrolled in the University of North Dakota ...

Lowell funeral home places obituary to honor 129 dead in Paris - Lowell Sun

Monday, June 19, 2017

The Sun, along with a single headline that didn't contain a name. "Paris," the headline simply stated. The obituary contained below was for at least 129 adults and children slain in a series of terror attacks in the City of Lights on Friday night. At least 350 others were injured. The obituary was written, submitted and paid for by the McKenna-Ouellette Funeral Home, which spent about $400 to honor those lost in France. "We serve a lot of families with French heritage," Funeral Director Ron D'Amato said. "But also, this story affected everyone, so we said, 'We need to do something to honor and remember the victims and their families.'" D'Amato said the funeral home initially posted the obituary on its Facebook page and elsewhere on social media, but decided to pay for an obituary in print in The Sun because many people they serve don't use social media. "We remind the world that each and every person that died in these senseless acts of terror individually and universally light a luminous candle that will remain where their beautiful souls have passed," the obituary states. D'Amato said the effort was a collaboration with two other funeral homes, who have also published a similar obituary in Worcester. Jim and John Heald of the Heald and Chiampa Funeral ...

Because of restricted covenant deeds, it (Black Bottom) was very, very dense," Coleman said."Some of those second-floor residential living quarters, on top of bars and restaurants and bakeries, where an owner might put a wall partion up in a bedroom and make it two bedrooms, or take the living room and slice that in half, until you get a couple different families living in the same 400 or 500 square feet, or probably even less."...

Group Visits Nine Cemeteries, Memorials to Recognize Fallen Military Members - Centralia Chronicle

Monday, June 19, 2017

County, striving to leave no veteran’s sacrifice forgotten. “They deserve that honor,” said Mitch Davis, incoming post commander of Winlock’s American Legion Post. Some veterans buried at the cemeteries visited Monday have no living relatives left. “We want people to know these people aren’t forgotten,” he said. Short ceremonies were held starting at 9:30 a.m. at Napavine Cemetery, the St. Urban Catholic Cemetery near Winlock, the Vader Catholic Cemetery, the Little Falls Ceremony, the Winlock Cemetery, the St. Francis Mission Cemetery, the Lone Hill Cemetery, the Toledo Cemetery and finally the Veterans Wall of Honor at Kemp Olson Memorial Park in Toledo. In preparation for Monday’s event, members of Common Ground Toledo, a nonprofit group dedicated to beautifying Toledo with plants, planted an “Honor Garden,” said Common Ground volunteer Linda Bird-Sonne. The garden includes plants such as patriot hosta, Dicentra, commonly known as “bleeding heart,” and red Japanese maple, Bird-Sonne said. About 20 veterans were involved in the event, along with a few Boy Scouts and one Girl Scout, said event coordinator and former Winlock American Legion Post commander Wendy Carolan. “We want to make sure all military veterans are remembered for their sacrifice and their service,” she said. While a small number of veterans participated in Monday’s ceremonies, they are a dedicated group. Tom Boone, of Lewis County’s 40 et 8, has worked to honor veterans by participating in the rifle salutes since the 1970s. He led Monday’s salute. He said he’ll stop “when they put me in the ground.”Several of the veterans in attendance said they hoped to attract more volunteers and younger veterans to participate in future events. “A lot more communities need to get involved doing this,” said Dave Dempewolf, chaplain at the Winlock American Legion Post.At the final ceremony of the day, veterans and volunteers left a wreath and a rose at the memorial wall and joined in a prayer asking to make veterans’ sacrifices worthwhile.“Help us preserve the high ideals for which our brothers and sisters died,” Master Sgt. Edward (Sparrow) Sparrowgrove said while leading the prayer.
