Frank Duca Funeral Home — with locations in Westmont and East Hills — has been in business for 37 years, and just opened its own crematory about a year ago.“I think the economy in our area has caused this fluctuation,” owner Frank Duca said of the rising popularity of cremation.But Duca also noted that the increase still puts Pennsylvania behind many other states.Nationally, he said, 55 percent of deaths result in cremation. That figure is projected to reach 48 percent in Pennsylvania by 2020.“My generation is still one of the ones that's still pretty conservative,” Duca said, adding that residents of Pennsylvania, Michigan and Ohio have been among the slowest to accept cremation.Troy Henderson of Henderson Funeral Homes said many Baby Boomers are beginning to inquire about cremation. His funeral homes — located in Johnstown, Conemaugh and Geistown — use cremation services offered at the George E. Mason Funeral Home's Countryside Crematory in Davidsville.“We're seeing an increase,” he said. “A lot of people are talking about it.”“It's less expensive to the family.”His explanation for the surging popularity is perhaps the saddest: Many older people no longer have relatives in the area.“At least in Johnstown, a lot of the population is moving away for jobs.”...
