Monday, October 10, 2016Tuesday, as she waited at the Rousseau Centre to see someone at the Victim Assistance office.“I don’t have anything,” she said, a day after she laid her son, Jerry, to rest at Lindenwood Cemetery. He was killed in an early morning shooting on Sept. 13 with two other men.The families of the victims in what is now referred to as The Holton Avenue Tragedy had four people to bury. With the enormous costs associated with burying four, the fathers of the two teenagers reached out to the community.Contrall Harris, father of Traeven Harris, 18, and Lavall Whitt, father of Dajahiona Arrington, 18, and grandfather to her 8½-month unborn son, estimated they would need $25,000 to bury the three when they appeared at a press conference held at New Beginnings Church on Sept. 15. That was four days after the victims were allegedly shot, and some also stabbed, by a former boyfriend, Marcus Dansby, whom police believe was jealous. The price went up when the combined funeral also included their mother, Consuela Arrington, 37.Tuesday, Fort Wayne businessman and real estate developer Bill Bean donated $25,000 to cover the remaining costs.“Nobody plans for a murder or a situation that occurred on Holton Avenue,” said Ellis, the funeral home owner. “There’s just no way you plan for that.”Victor Nelson, owner of Nelson Memorial Gardens on Eliza Street, said he realizes most residents don’t purchase life insurance.“My service costs (reflect) an understanding of the community that I grew up in. Everybody doesn’t have $10,000 lying around. Most people in our community don’t realistically get insurance,” Nelson said. The average cost for a burial and memorial service runs about $10,000, Nelson and Ellis said. David Carmichael, owner of Carmichael, declined an interview. That cost also usually includes flowers, programs for the memorial service, vault opening and closing and cemetery space. Even with a casket donated, Coleman said she needed to raise $5,200 before her son was buried. For a better understanding of how funeral costs compare in Allen County, Ellis pointed to a website www.parting.com. Although Nelson Memorial Gardens doesn’t appear on the list, the first two funeral homes listed in ascending price order are Ellis and Carmichael.About 60 percent of Nelson’s burials are pauper funerals, many of them through Wayne Tow...

Monday, September 05, 2016Seated just behind them was Hardrix’s street family, making up about half of the 70 or so people who attended the service at Nelson Memorial Gardens on Eliza Street and subsequent burial at Lindenwood Cemetery. A family repast was offered afterward at the Greater Progressive Baptist Church on John Street, the home church for Shirley Hardrix.“We don’t understand everything that happens,” Pastor Anthony Pettus Sr. of Greater Progressive said during the service, “but one good thing about sad days is they don’t last always.”Hardrix was stabbed to death sometime after Aug. 18, when some of his street family said he dropped off his bike at a High Street home where he had been staying and the following morning, Aug. 21, when a Schilling Avenue neighbor found his body behind his home a...
