Tuesday, April 18, 2017Russo and Lubonir Shyshka. Lubonir died in a plane crash when Cookie was 3 weeks old. Her mother, Rosemary, remarried Joe Wildermuth. Her family once lived in Berlin, Germany, before coming to Alexandria, Virginia, where Cookie lived as a teenager and graduated high school from T.C. Williams High School in 1964. Cookie was then accepted to American University in Washington, D.C., but decided to become a mother instead. She married Roger Golt, who fathered her three children. After their divorce, she and her three children drove a Volkswagen bug across the U.S. to settle in Nashville, Indiana, in 1976. They first lived on Tuck A Way Ridge, then shortly moved to Artist Drive, where Cookie lived for the past 41 years. In Nashville, Cookie met the love of her life, Steve Smith, and they married on April 8, 1981. Steve passed away from a brain aneurysm in 1994, and was buried in Greenlawn Cemetery in Nashville.Cookie did everything she could to build a loving, caring home for all who entered it. She was a hardworking mother, homemaker and parent. She supported her children by working at The Seasons as a cocktail waitress and front desk clerk, working for her uncle Frank at Hills O’ Brown Realty, and working at both the Brown County Folk Shop and Mrs. Cassiday’s Children’s Shop. Before he passed, she and Steve coached Emily and Kate’s softball team and she led their Girl Scout troop. Cookie always enjoyed watching the news, playing solitaire, reading, chatting, cooking — and eating! Cookie made the best strawberry pie her family ever had!The bonds she fostered among friends and family are everlasting because these relationships meant everything to her. (Kramer Funeral Homes) - Friends and family are remembering the life of a woman who embodied the spirit of giving in the Alexandria community.Wanda Ozier, 65, of Alexandria, died Saturday, April 15. She worked with and helped start several non-profit organizations in the community. She was also known for her grant writing and speaking skills. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Wanda Marie Chicola Ozier at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 20, 2017, at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church (Pineville), with Rev. Bruce Miller officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park under the direction of John Kramer & Son Funeral Home. Saturday, April 08, 2017College Park; a daughter from his first marriage, Andrea Gentle of London; three sisters, former Post food critic Phyllis Richman of Washington, Myrna Chasanow of Cheverly, Md., and Ruth Heitin of Alexandria; and two grandsons.Around the Prince George’s County Courthouse, Judge Chasanow liked to recount “the comma that saved a life.”A condemned man, the judge said, was en route to his execution when a telegram from the governor arrived. It read: “Pardon, impossible to execute.” He was spared.Only later did the warden discover there had been a typographical error. This was what had been intended: “Pardon impossible to execute.” The inadvertent comma had saved the condemned man’s life and the state had repealed the death penalty before the warden discovered the error.In May 1979, Judge Chasanow faced a similar situation in a death penalty case, declaring in court that his decision had to be based on “grammar and legislative intent,” and he said he stayed up most of the night poring through old grammar books.The defendant, William Joseph Parker, a transient Prince George’s County fireman, had been convicted of murder and rape. The relevant Maryland law allowed the death penalty for a conviction of murder while committing “rape or a sexual offense in the first degree.”Parker was convicted of murder and second-degree rape.
