Monday, January 09, 2017RAPID CITY Time was cut short for Major Daniel Kimmel Carnes, 69, when he passed the morning of New Year’s Eve 2016.Dan was born Sept. 1, 1947, to George William and Ruth Carnes in Ligonier, PA. He graduated from Grove City College with a B.A. in Psychology. Later he attended the University of Northern Colorado and earned his M.B.A. in Guidance and Counseling. Dan enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served for 20 years from 1969 to 1989; he was stationed at Ellsworth AFB in 1986. Upon retirement from the Air Force, Dan continued to work in Rapid City until his final retirement in 2016.Dan along with Veronica Carnes raised three children. He and his family lived in Chapel Valley for close to 30 years. Dan enjoyed camping, fishing, skiing, and running in the Black Hills. He dedicated his time to coaching various sports for his children. He was an active member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church, where he met his future wife, Karen Ham. Dan and Karen were married March 5, 2016.
