Sunday, February 12, 2017Nursing School, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in nursing and began her career as a registered nurse, a passion she continued for 45 years.She was a member of First Baptist Church of Rockville, Md.Pat had a passion for helping those in need. She and her husband volunteered their time with the Bethesda Help organization.She also enjoyed painting, gardening, traveling and spending time with her family and grandchildren.Pat is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Herbert Donald "Don" Hochstein; three children, Lisa Lynn Walker and husband, Roger, Craig D. Hochstein and wife, Kimi, and Nancy P. Bittner and husband, Neil; seven grandchildren, Zachary Lynn and wife, Elizabeth, Gregory Lynn, Brent Hochstein, Audrey Hochstein, Matthew Bittner, Elizabeth Bittner and Madeline Bittner; a great-grandson, Parker Bittner; a niece, Kathie Carpenter Held; and nephew, Phillip Carpenter.In addition to her parents, Pat was preceded in death by her sister, June Carpenter and husband, James.A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, March 10, 2017, in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.The family will receive friends following the burial at Rest Haven Funeral Home, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown.The family would like to thank Brookdale Assisted Living and Hospice of Washington County and especially Kelly Lilley R.N., social worker, Rick, and Chaplain Michael for their caring, loving support.Memorial donations be made in Pat's name to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742.www.rsthvn.com...

Monday, January 16, 2017Local Jewish leaders point to several cases as a cause for worry that the contract could be in jeopardy if SCI takes control of Hines-Rinaldi.Hausman said he invited an SCI-owned funeral home in Rockville, Edward Sagel Funeral Direction, to bid on a contract with the Jewish community in 2012. A Sagel associate made an offer that matched the price of the contract with Hines-Rinaldi but fell short in other areas, Hausman recalled. Among the differences: Only members of the 48 congregations would be eligible for the funeral packages, not their families, and the 30-day mourning period would not have been respected.Separately, the B’nai Israel Congregation in Rockville has had a contract with the Sagel home for about a decade. Until recently, the contract set the rate for a basic Jewish funeral, including a coffin, at $2,350, according to Marc Barinbaum, chairman of the synagogue’s bereavement committee. But he said “things changed” when it was time to talk about renewing in 2012. The funeral home set the new price at $4,500, plus an additional fee for the coffin, adding at least $495 more to the price, Barinbaum said.Barinbaum said he faced a “take it or leave it” attitude from SCI and signed a new contract in January 2013.Edward Sagel, the funeral home’s founder, referred questions to SCI.Marshall, the SCI spokeswoman, said Hausman’s description of the committee’s interaction with the Sagel home...

Monday, January 09, 2017Food and Drug Administration, died Nov. 3 at an assisted-living center in Olney, Md. The cause was congestive heart failure, said a son, Richard Rohan.Mrs. Rohan, a resident of Rockville, Md., was born Alice Radolinski in Dahlgren, Va. Before joining the FDA in the late 1970s, she had been a clerk at the National Institutes of Health and worked at the Vitro Corp. As a young woman, she was a licensed airplane pilot and flew non-commercial single-prop aircraft as an avocation.Amy Thorne, CIA officerAmy Thorne, 54, a CIA intelligence officer from 1985 to 1995, died Nov. 20 at a medical center in Idaho Falls, Idaho. The cause was a heart attack, said her husband, Steve Thorne.Mrs. Thorne was born Amy Kline in Pittsburgh and grew up in Fairfax County, Va. She also accompanied her father on his CIA postings to Africa, Asia and Europe. In 1995 she moved from Fairfax to North Bend, Wash., and later to Idaho Falls.Lester Schlitz, judge, mediatorLester Schlitz, 99, a Virginia state judge and member of the legislature who in retirement was a mediator at the D.C. Superior Court, died Nov. 2 at his home in Chevy Chase, Md. The cause was heart ailments, said a son, David Schlitz.Judge Schlitz was born in Portsmouth, Va., where he practiced law and served as chief judge of the 3rd Judicial Circuit of Virginia. He also was a Democratic member of the Virginia House of Delegates from 1968 to 1975.
