Monday, January 16, 2017CHAMPAIGN – Barbara Jean Butler Kobel, 83, passed away at 1:25 a.m. Wednesday (Jan. 11, 2017) at Presence Covenant Medical Center, Urbana.Barb was born on Nov. 20, 1933, near Allerton to Lawrence Patrick and Eva Anna Henry Butler. She met her husband Ed Kobel while working at Collegiate Cap and Gown in Champaign. They married on Oct. 1, 1955, at Immaculate Conception Church in Bongard.She is survived by her husband of 61 years and their children, Patty Kobel and Nancy Kobel of Champaign, and Mike Kobel of Urbana; a sister, Marilyn Block (Dan) of Broadlands; numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, great-great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-great-nieces and nephews. She was viewed as a mother and grandmother to numerous extended family.Barb graduated from Longview High School in 1951. After high school, she entered nurses training at Mercy Hospital, Urbana, where she worked as a registered nurse for several years.As an involved stay-at-home mom, she was a Brownie Troop leader, block parent and Champaign Central band booster parent.
