Long-Time Gerber Chapel Closes In Webster Groves - Webster Kirkwood Times

Monday, January 09, 2017

Webster Groves to predate Gerber's. Gerber said that during the first year of owning the business, in 1961, he and his then wife, the late Ramona Dysart Gerber, lived above the funeral parlor with their two toddlers and a baby. Jodi Gerber Anderson recalled with fondness those times as a child when she and her siblings were free to run about and play at the family's business when funerals weren't being held. "Our memories are all of joy for this place," she said. Don Gerber, a U.S. Navy veteran, has been a member of the Webster Groves Lions Club since 1959 and was a Community Days Parade grand marshal three times. He was named "Citizen of the Year" for Webster Groves in 1974, and was honored earlier in 2016 by the Missouri Legislature for 54 years of business and community service. A spokesperson for Dignity Memorial said all families previously served by Gerber Chapel will be welcomed at the Hoffmeister Colonial location, 6464 Chippewa Street in St. Louis, or any other Dignity Memorial location. "Any funeral prearrangement plan made with Gerber Chapel is safe and valid," according to a Dignity Memorial statement. All employees of Gerber Chapel have been provided the opportunity to remain in the employ of Dignity Memorial.
