Retired Stonewood Fire Chief Bill Powell passes away at the age of 70 - The Exponent Telegram

Monday, January 16, 2017

Miller said Powell’s specialty was auto extrication, rescuing patients who have become trapped inside a vehicle.“Bill was ahead of his time in auto extrication,” said Randy Hartley, who took classes from Bill as a teenager. “And if you needed help at all with anything, he was there for you. He was a great guy.”“One of the last rescues I was on, Bill and I were there, and we were trying to rescue someone from a car that had been flipped over and was in water,” Miller said. “It was about four below zero out there, and hypothermia was starting to set in. Bill refused to go to the hospital. Finally, someone said ‘Bill, your brain is frozen. You have to go to the hospital.’ But that’s just the way he was. There was no stopping Bill Powell. He has improved more lives than you can imagine, and saved more lives than an average person could save in a lifetime.”Bridgeport Fire Chief Phil Hart also knew Powell through the fire department.“Bill was an instructor and in other departments, but we went out on calls together,” Hart said. “He was a great person and fun to be around. He was always kind of a jokester, but when it came time to be serious, he was serious. When he was on the scene of an incident, it was strictly business. There was no joking around there.”Hart said he remembers a particular class that Powell was teaching very well because of the circumstances.“He was teaching an auto extrication class outside one day, and it was getting ready to storm,” Hart said. “We told him it was going to storm, and he said ‘Well, people wreck during storms, so you need to be prepared,’ and he continued the class. We kept going and a nearby tree was struck by lightning. Nobody was injured, but from then on if it started to cloud up, Bill moved the class inside.”Hart said even after Powell retired, firefighters would call him and discuss incidents.“He’ll be greatly missed,” Hart said. “He’s a great loss not only to his commun...
