Mr. Stanley L. Newton, age 63 years, of Lawrence, Kansas, a former Jefferson City resident passed away Sunday, June 18, 2017 in Orlando, FL.Stan was born February 23, 1954 in West Plains, MO. a son of Delbert Eugene “Gene” and Maggie Belle (Smith) Newton. He was married on March 3, 1972 in Springfield, MO. to Sara Strong and from this marriage his two children were born, Aaron and Courtney. Sara and he remained friends to this day. He was a 1972 graduate of Jefferson City High School and had many lifelong friends through his class. Stan was employed in the energy sector his entire professional career, which spanned over 40 years. He was currently employed as a Senior Originator with Westar Energy, based out of Topeka, Kansas, but he traveled the country working with clients. Before his career with Westar, he had worked with Missouri Power and Light (while living in Jefferson City and Moberly), Associated Electric (while living in Springfield), and Cargill (while living in Madison, Wisconsin and Minneapolis, Minnesota). Fleming, age 80 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away Friday, June 16, 2017 at his home.Jim was born on August 24, 1936 in Poplar Bluff, Mo. the son of the late William and Irene (Putnam) Fleming. He was raised on a rural farm by his grandparents, Walter and Pearl Putnam, in Callaway County, Mo. He graduated as valedictorian of his class from New Bloomfield High School, where he excelled in both baseball and track. Jim began a career working for the United States Department of Defense in Washington, D.C. as a computer programmer. He provided on-site support for the Joint Chiefs of Staff communications computers at the Pentagon during his career that spanned over 30 years. Military assignments his last 18 years included installing computer LANs (Local Area Network) at military Command-Posts in Saudi Arabia, Bosnia, and Somalia. Roger Swiderski and his wife Leslie; her brother, Raymond Magas; her sisters, Jane LeBlanc, Elaine Tedesco and Helena Alegi and her husband John; her grandchildren, Al Terry, Jr., Michael Terry, Kate Jefferson, Matt Terry and Carrie Swiderski; her great grandchildren, Dylan, Julia, Alaina, Olivia, Freya and Thor; her sisters in law, Helen Magas and Eleanor Magas and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and her parents, Betty was predeceased by her brothers, Edward, Michael and Leo Magas. Canyon, Texas in 1970 with a degree in journalism.He studied further at the University of Missouri School of Journalism in Columbia and then worked as a general assignment reporter for the Jefferson City News-Tribune in the early 1970s. He served for twenty-five years as a state public information officer in Missouri State Government, including seventeen years with the State Emergency Management Agency, retiring in August, 2002.Upon retirement, Dennis enjoyed hiking, photography, writing, and spending time with his two grandchildren. He was a long-term member of the Jefferson City Photo Club, the Runge Nature Center Hiking Club, and the Midweek Trekkers. He cherished annual trips to Rhode Island and the New England states to visit family and friends. Dennis was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he enjoyed their book discussion groups. He was an officer and board member of the Jefferson City Chapter of the AARP, Chapter 4401 for many years, and wrote articles and features of interest to seniors for the monthly Active Times/Active Life supplement to the Jefferson City News-Tribune. He was a member of the Jefferson City/Cole County Senior Nutrition Council for six years.Survivors include: his wife of twenty-five years, Judy Mobrice; one step-daughter, Kimberly Anne Johnson and her husband Stephen of Jefferson City, Mo.; two grandchildren, Matthew Johnson and Sarah Johnson of Jefferson City, Mo.; one nephew, Paul D.
