Monday, March 27, 2017Lawrence and Brockton, never stopped being a street cop.An imposing figure who did daily workouts with a punching bag in his basement, ran marathons, and competed in the 2001 reality TV series “Lost” in Bolivia, Mr. Hayden displayed a legendary toughness coupled with deep compassion for underdogs and a devotion to public service, colleagues said.“He was someone I greatly admired. He was wonderful for the city,” said former Boston mayor Raymond L. Flynn. “I remember his professionalism, decency, and compassion, especially during the busing era.”Mr. Hayden, a Dorchester native who also served as undersecretary for state public safety and assistant general manager for safety for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, died of cancer Saturday in South Shore Hospital. He was 74 and lived in Hingham. The couple lived in West Point and Donna worked at DV Industries in Pender, Smeal Fire Apparatus in Snyder, and lastly at Marathon Press in Norfolk. Six years ago, Donna and Tim moved to Hidden Meadows, near West Point, to enjoy lake living.Donna enjoyed cooking, baking, canning, quilting, and sewing. She loved spending time with her family, especially being “Nana” to her grandchildren. Ralph worked hard (too many hours) his whole life and generously gave back to his community in many ways (Rotary Club, Elks, ASA Umpire, local Oktoberfest, etc). Ralph was known by many as "Buda", a man who kept his word no matter what, a self-educated man, a fierce competitor and friend, a bull, a teddy bear, a leader, a person you could always come to for help, a man who professed the 6 "P's", our Patriarch, and most of all a selfless and dedicated family man. Ralph is survived by his wife of 52 years Patricia "Trish" A. Schaffer (Wigmore), daughter and husband Denise and Timothy Swick, son and wife, Ralph and Rhonda Schaffer III, son and wife Joseph and Yulia Schaffer. Ralph was predeceased by sister Roberta Powell and survived by sister Diane Jackson and brother Bruce Schaffer.Ralph is survived by 11 grandchildren (Larissa and husband Jason, Bradley, Kyle, Sarah, Anthony, Ashlee, Sydney, Nikkie, Kahlan, and Samantha) and 4 great-grandchildren (Raelyn, Kensley, Nolan, and Felix) and predeceased by his best friend (Bacardi). Monday, February 06, 2017Mr. DiLeonardi, who grew up near Belmont and Central on the Northwest Side and attended Steinmetz High School, was a lifelong fitness buff. He ran dozens of marathons — the last one while he was in his 70s — and he didn’t stop jogging until about three years ago when he began to suffer from heart disease, his wife said.He was a member of the University of Illinois at Chicago Baseball Hall of Fame and earned the school’s most valuable player honor in 1950 and 1951. His baseball career ended when he was struck in the eye by a baseball during a tryout for the New York Yankees, his wife said.In addition to his wife, Mr. DiLeonardi is survived by a son, Joseph DiLeonardi Jr.; brothers Arthur and George DiLeonardi; sisters Gloria Malnak and Joyce Cox-Cunningham; and two grandchildren.
