He accepted the Lord at an early age and joined St. James Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the Rev. James M. Butler.He received his early education at Pierce County Training School in Patterson. After moving to Waycross, he completed his education at Waycross High School with the graduating class of 1977. He furthered his education at ATI in Ft. Tuesday, April 18, 2017OAKLAND — Hundreds of firecrackers and the pounding of large Tanggu drums provided an unusual experience at the Chapel of the Chimes crematory and colombarium on April Fool’s Day.All that noise and commotion had a solemn purpose: It was part of Ching Ming, a custom thousands of years old in China, in which people honor and celebrate their deceased ancestors.The lion dancers, accompanying firecrackers, drumming and cymbals arrived in a van full of students from the San Francisco chapter of the international Yau Kung Moon martial arts organization, including several visitors from Australia.“We’re Taoists, but Buddhism was and is a major part of Chinese culture. The lion is symbolic of bowing to deities. This is a celebration time to bring in the spirits and send good luck to the dead and celebrate with them. Monday, April 03, 2017Lopez said. “Because around here, it could have been.”Alex Lopez, 12, and his brother, Isaiah, 11, were electrocuted Wednesday evening while playing with friends at Oakland Lake Park. They were exploring a wooded area, family said, when Alex stepped in a puddle that was electrified by nearby downed power lines. Isaiah tried to save him but was shocked by his brother’s touch.Their memorial Friday night was a chance for more than 100 friends and family to remember the boys — the crowd released dozens of red and blue balloons and lit candles.But it was also an opportunity for the mourners to see up close where the accident happened, where the Lopez brothers played often with neighborhood kids.The spot was off a trail about 20 yards into a thicket of trees and brush just beyond a ballfield at the park. It was marked off with caution tape Friday, but many who attended the memorial stepped through the barrier to pay their respects.They set up a small wooden cross and tied to it a bundle of shiny balloons.
