Union County St. Patrick’s Day Parade has grown from drawing 10,000 spectators during its inaugural run in 1997 to more than 40,000 on-lookers in recent years.According to Parade Adjutant Debbie Sully, who also coordinates parade logistics with the Township of Union, the 2017 Union County St. Patrick’s Day Parade will feature high school marching bands from the Township of Union and Roselle Park and the Governor Livingston High School Highlander Band. The many bagpipe bands marching include the Union County Police & Fire Pipes & Drums and the St. Columcille United Gaelic Pipe Band. Also marching will be Fourth Degree color guards from the Knights of Columbus, non-profit units, local police and fire departments and the Garden State Ceili Club float.A Mass will be celebrated at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church in Elizabeth at 9 a.m. to begin the day followed by a welcoming reception in the church hall. St. Patrick’s Church is located at 215 Court Street in Elizabeth, NJ 07206.The family-friendly festivities kick off at 12:00 Noon at the reviewing stand located at the corner of Morris and Stuyvesant Avenues in Union Center with a warm Irish welcome from parade officials, traditional Irish music and Irish step-dancing. The one-mile parade will begin at 1 p.m. at Commerce Avenue and Morris Avenue, proceeding east on Morris Avenue to Union Center and south onto Stuyvesant Avenue, ending at Roosevelt Avenue.The parade will also feature a Kids Zone presented by the Union Special Improvement District. The Kids Zone will feature inflatable rides, walk-around entertainers and activities for the whole family. Located on Stuyvesant and Morris Avenues, the Kid Zone brings additional amusement for young visitors, as well as the young-at-heart.The following organizations make up the Union County St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee: The John Cryan Association, The Thornsticks, The Irish-American Society of Union, The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick Union County, the Joseph Nugent Sr. Association, the Kenilworth Veterans Center/VFW 2230, the Ancient Order of Hibernians of Rahway, the Union County Emerald Society, the Sheridan School of Irish Dance, the Union County Irish-American Association, the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians of Elizabeth, the Garden State Ceili Club, St. Helen’s R.C. Protestant Reformed Church.  On May 29, 1941, she was united in marriage with Herman Bruxvoort in Oskaloosa. To this union one son was born, Donald Wayne. They made their home on farms in the Sully, Peoria and Kellogg areas, before moving to Newton, where they lived for more than 60 years. Helping Herman on the farm, Kay had devoted her life to her husband, children, grandchildren and family. Kay and Herman were faithful member of the Newton Christian Reformed Church, where she taught Sunday School and participated and served in many varied ways. The last seven years, Kay spent at the Newton Village Retirement Community. She truly enjoyed her family and friends, cooking, baking, her flowers, birds and all nature. Kay went to be with her Lord Friday morning, Jan. 13, 2017, at the Nelson Manor in Newton. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Herman Feb. 27, 2010; her four brothers, John, Sam, Cornie and Ed Boender; four sisters, Nellie Stouwie, Helen Bruxvoort, Wilma Veldhuizen and Martha Eniengenberg.  Those left to honor Kay’s memory are her son, Donald (Theresa) Bruxvoort of South Haven, Mich.; two granddaughters, Jana (Brian) Van Haaften and Pam (Eric) Hyde; a grandson, Brian (Chris) Bruxvoort; her seven great-grandchildren, Tiffany and Reece (Jessica) Van Haaften, Caleb, Ezra and Sophia Hyde, and Ursula and Donovan Bruxvoort; brother, Harry (Elizabeth) Boender; sister-in-law, Marilyn Boender; many nieces and nephews; and her many good neighbors and friends. Kay was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and showed much affection for her family, friends, the elderly and her church. After high school, she attended Capital City Commercial College in Des Moines.On February 17, 1940, she was united in marriage with Oscar C. Halblom, a native of Sully, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.  This union was blessed with a son, Randall Dean.Ruth and Oscar farmed for 25 years in Poweshiek and Mahaska counties and she was also employed as a secretary at William Penn College in Oskaloosa.  In November of 1969, they moved to Iowa City and Ruth was employed as a secretary in charge of the graduate program at the University of Iowa.  She worked with Dr. Robert Yager for 18 years and retired in the mid 1990’s.  During this time they returned to Grinnell in 1977 to make their home.Ruth was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, Women’s Methodist Organization, holding various offices, the Historical & Literacy Club and Sunset Club.  She taught Sunday school and enjoyed music, gardening, painting and reading.  She loved the outdoors and living and working on their farm was a huge part of her life.Survivors include one grandson, Matthew (Janelle) Halblom of Urbana; three great-grandchildren, Christopher (Kenzie Blaha), Drake and Payton Halblom; a daughter-in-law, Charlene Marsh of Cedar Rapids; and a brother-in-law, Bert Permar of Marshalltown.  She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Oscar on 1996; her son, Randall in 1976; and three sisters, Herma Cowell, Ethel Mae Swartz and Darlene Permar.Read or Share this story: http://dmreg.co/1tsYzgp...
