After a short ceremony Monday at Toledo’s Kemp Olson Memorial Park, several veterans and their families took a few moments to read the names of friends and neighbors inscribed on the bricks of the Veterans Wall of Honor. “I know a lot of them on the wall,” said Lewis Zion, of Onalaska’s American Legion Post 508. “As a kid growing up, you know a lot of people, but you didn’t know they were in the service.”The memorial wall honors both living and dead veterans. Katrina Downie.Don graduated from Ashtabula High School in ’76 and BGSU with a degree in information technology. He worked several years at BGSU, Intelidata, Mazada, and retired from Medical Mutual (Toledo & Cleveland). Don was an avid runner and enjoyed fishing and gardening. Don was a diehard Cleveland sports fan, especially the Cleveland Indians. Family was the most important part of Don’s life; he coached his children in cross country, soccer and wrestling. He also helped them build and construct home projects.Don graciously donated his body to the University of Toledo Medical Center for medical research. He graduated from the Toledo High School's Class of 1954 and then served our country honorably in the United States Army. While stationed at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky, he met the lovely Ivey.Article PhotosDale “Mr. D” DeFranceOn January 16th, 1958, he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Ivey Mary Louise Pruitt, in a wedding officiated by her father, the Rev. Ivan Pruitt. Dale always commented he "kidnapped her" and the two shared nearly 54 years of a blessed marriage before her passing in 2011.Dale was a machinist for Fisher Controls in Marshalltown from 1959 until his retirement in January of 1998. He previously drove a contractor truck for the U.S. Postal service. His heart always was with his family, but his passions in life included racing (Pontiac Yellow and Black #44), going to the casino, racing go-karts in the 60's and time with friends.
