She had made her home in Marion for the past 10 years and was a former resident of Mansfield.Prior to retiring, she had worked for several years in the admitting department at Falmouth Hospital. She had previously worked at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro for many years, and also as a title examiner in the City of Taunton.Since living in Marion, Karen was a member of the Council on Aging, where she made many friends and enjoyed the council's hospitality of shopping trips.Karen loved spending time with her family and received so much pleasure doing jigsaw puzzles with her adoring grandchildren. She also enjoyed reading and cooking, and when younger, the many summers spent in Popponesset.She is survived by her devoted children: Stephen Prevett of Georgia, Denise Prevett of Everett, Patricia Marraffa and her husband Tony of Mattapoisett, and John Prevett and his wife Karen of Mansfield. She was the dear sister of Kenneth Grew of Grafton, Gail Taddeo of Florida, and Steven Grew of North Carolina. She was the cherished grandmother of Jenna, Samantha, Alec, Jay, Emily, Anthony, Paige, Cole, and Jake, the great-grandmother of Rhys, and is also survived by many nieces and nephews, and her best friends Paul, Annie, Nancy, and Priscilla.Services and burial will be private.Visiting hours have been omitted and those wishing may remember Kare...

Lilley, for decades one of Maine’s most prominent and effective criminal defense attorneys, died Saturday evening, according to friends and former associates.Lilley, who lived in Falmouth, was 79 and had been hospitalized for a few days, said F. Lee Bailey of Yarmouth, a close friend.Bailey, himself a famed criminal defense lawyer who was part of the defense team at O.J. Simpson’s murder trial in the mid-1990s, said Lilley was the “greatest” criminal defense attorney Maine has ever seen.“I think he is going to be sorely missed,” Bailey said during a telephone interview Sunday night. “He liked to get a good result in the courtroom. That to me is the hallmark of a good defense attorney.”Bailey said that while Lilley sometimes came across as gruff and aggressive in the courtroom, underneath that facade was a good, kind-hearted person.“People are surprised to find out that a criminal defense lawyer doesn’t have two heads, that they have a heart as well,” Bailey said.Another colleague of Lilley’s, Stephen Schwartz, a Portland criminal defense attorney, called him “a brilliant trial lawyer” whose death is “a huge loss to the trial community of Maine.”During Schwartz’...

In 2004 Helen and Jim moved back to Maine permanently where they continued to live in their home in Cumberland Foreside and then Ocean View At Falmouth which allowed them to spend wonderful times with their son John, his wife Corey and their children. After Jim’s death Helen moved to Darien, CT. to be near daughter Nancy, her husband Terry and their family. In these last years she relished her time with loving grandchildren and great grandchildren.Helen was pre-deceased by her husband, mother, father and brother, Robert Burns Poe, Jr. She is survived by son James P. Goodrich and wife Marilyn of St. Helen, OR; Dr. John F. Goodrich and wife Corey of Cumberland, ME and daughter Nancy G. McGraw and her husband Terry McGraw of Darien, CT. She also leaves grandchildren Shane, Chad and Travis Goodrich, Kate Day (Adam), Ryan Goodrich (Mary), Dary Goodrich (Cat), Whit McGraw (Camilla) and Megan Mozingo (Clayton) as well as 12 great grandchildren, brother David Poe and brother in-law William Goodrich. Helen kept a special lifelong friendship with Charlotte Hutton of Seattle, WA. The family would like to thank Helen’s wonderful caregivers in Connecticut, especially Ann, Brigitte, Charmaine, Christine, Keight and Woodland. The family would also like to thank Homepartners in Maine. They made the last years of her life full of laughter and loving care.A private family memorial service is planned at the Noroton Presbyterian Chapel on March, 26th in Darien, CT. Max, as his friends and family called him, was a true American hero who conquered the American Dream.Max was a member of Falmouth Methodist Church and was laid to rest in Christian burial with a funeral service on Tuesday, January 24, at Crain Funeral Home in Newton.James was born on May 30, 1927, to grocery store owners in Wheeler, IL, Max was the oldest of three children. He claims to have walked to school uphill both ways with holes in his shoes and only one sock. He was constantly playing practical jokes on his teachers as well as picking on his brother and sister at home. When Pearl Harbor was bombed in 1941 he wanted to go to war, unfortunately he was only 14 at the time and couldn’t. So he waited two years, lied about his age as any hero would do, and entered the United States Navy during World War II where he was a motor machinist and combat gunner on an LST in the South Pacific. Based on the fact that he wouldn’t share any stories with anyone that didn’t involve him getting his nose broken trying to get on a bus after a night out with his friends in Hawaii or about the time he danced with Veronica Lake, it is our assumption that he was very good at what he ...
