Sunday, February 12, 2017Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.During her lifetime, Cynthia taught at the Chillicothe High School in Chillicothe, Illinois; Keller Grade School in Peoria Heights, Illinois; and the Gorham Schools in Gorham, Illinois. She worked several years helping her husband, Gene, at Pettett Funeral Home in Murphysboro, and was the retired owner/operator of Kenlake Marina and Cindy’s on the Barge restaurant located at Kenlake State Resort Park in Aurora. She was a member of St. Matthew by the Lake Lutheran Church in Benton.She married Herbert E. “Gene” Pettett on Nov. 22, 1964, in Pana, Illinois. Born to this union were two daughters, Monique N. Pettett of Fredericksburg, Virginia, and Jeannene P. (Kristian) Hall of Stafford; and one granddaughter, Emma W. Hall of Stafford. Also surviving are two brothers, Eugene W. Hinton of Hardin and George W. Hinton of Springfield, Illinois.The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 7, 2016, at Pettett Funeral Home in Murphysboro, with Melissa Waterman officiating. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2016, in Lacon Cemetery in Lacon, Illinois. Rietdorf, 102, of Murray, Kentucky, died Thursday, Oct. 27, 2016, at Spring Creek Health Care in Murray.She was born on Oct. 17, 1914, in Paducah, Kentucky, to Walter Attebury and Alice Sayer Attebury. She retired from the Florsheim Shoe Factory in Paducah before it closed and was the oldest member of Palestine United Methodist Church.In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Rietdorf, and four brothers, Donald, Charles, Paul and Walter “Bud” Attebury.Mrs. Rietdorf is survived by one sister, Lucille Blankenship of Reidland, and several nieces.A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, 2016, at Woodlawn Cemetery in Paducah, Kentucky with Robert McKinney officiating. William McKinley Newsome and Anna Springer Newsome. He was a retired Free Will Baptist Minister for over 40 years, pastoring churches in Michigan, Missouri, Kentucky, North Carolina, and Tennessee. He proudly served his country aboard the U.S.S. General SD Sturgis AP137 during WWII in the Pacific Conflict going almost completely around the world to keep America safe. He was present on VJ Day on Sept. 2, 1945, in Tokyo Bay at the signing of the peace treaty. He was also a Kentucky Colonel.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by beloved wife, Violet Newsome; two sisters, Francis McCage and Opal Mitchell, and two brothers, Russell Newsome, and Tvis Henry Newsome.He was a loving father, and grandfather. (Loretta) Moeckel; and brother-in-law, Dr. JC Bright.Shirley graduated from Gorham High School in 1947, he worked for his father on the farm and in the family tavern from 1947-1950, served in the United States Air Force from 1951-1955, and started his career as a farmer and business owner in 1956. Shirley served 15 years on Twin County Service Co., one year on Board of Directors, nine years as Vice President, and five years as President; served as Director of Jackson County Farm Bureau Board; Director of Illinois Grain Corp. Board, until merger with FS Growmark; director of First National Bank Board of Gorham; was presently, President of KHJ Inc., buying and selling of farms and commercial land and investments. Monday, December 12, 2016Mike Beard, an assistant boys’ basketball coach at Clinton County, wrote in an email to the Herald-Leader.In an article in The Kentucky Kernel from March 3, 1950 preserved on BigBlueHistory.net, Bob Gorham wrote that “Castle is a ball-hawking specialist that set up the Cats’ fast break offense.” Castle was part of a UK class that assistant coach Harry Lancaster called “The best freshman basketball club we’ve ever had.”Castle’s visitation lasts from 12-5 p.m. Saturday and his funeral begins 2 p.m. Sunday. Both will be held at Lindle Castle Gymnasium.
