Salem, VA and Poca, WV, went to be with the Lord after a long illness on Tuesday, June 13, 2017. She is preceded in death by husband, Kermit Lee Vest; parents, George Howard and Ethel Belle (Kincaid) Phillips; maternal grandparents, Norah Rinehart and Thomas Kincaid; and paternal grandparents, Lula Scott and Abner Phillips. Left to cherish her memory are children, Leon Franklin, Jr. and wife, Melinda, Kim Vest and husband, Matt Clark, and Chris Vest and wife, Janice; siblings, Judy Casto, Greg Phillips, Stewart Phillips, and Tammy Phillips; grandchildren, Josh Franklin, Eli Franklin, Gabe Franklin, Grace Franklin, Tori Vest, Ethan Vest, and Gavin Vest; and dear friends, Kim and Oscar Smith, Sharon and Lee Linkous, Jack Clifton and many others. Shari graduated from Montgomery High School in Montgomery, WV in 1968. She worked as a Treasurer’s Clerk for Roanoke County for many years as well as in the ticket office of the Salem Civic Center. Some of Shari’s favorite pastimes were quilting, spending time at Smith Mountain Lake, eating her Moose Track ice cream, and going to Mac And Bob’s every chance she could. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Rollie Phillips, three brothers, and three sisters. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Ruth Aliff Hoffman; a son, Glenn Hoffman and wife Jean; two daughters, Ramona Bryant and husband Donnie; Janet Phillips; a brother, John Hoffman and wife Barbara; sister, Mary Dahlen and husband Francis; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2PM, Friday, June 16, 2017 at the Chapel of John M. Oakey & Son, Salem. Pastors Dan Carawan and Sam Huntley will officiate. Burial will follow at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends for two hours prior to the service at the funeral home. Lancaster, California in 1957. He later joined Sears as a merchandise manager and relocated to Hemet, California in 1966. In 1973 he joined Skyline Corporation in sales and later worked for Phillips Gasket Company as the General Manager. After retirement from Phillips in 1992, he relocated to Louisville, Colorado and owned a small art gallery and framing shop, which he operated until 2002. In 2008 he relocated to Sequim, WA to be closer to family.Besides working, Don loved sailing Hobie Cats, snow skiing, and photography. He was a Lutheran and was active in many church activities throughout his life.Don married Donna Rudolph of Fargo in 1948. They had three children, all living, Paul Summers of Sequim WA (age 64), Marc Monson of Broomfield CO (age 62), and Jon Monson of Gig Harbor WA (age 58). Don and Donna divorced in 1971. In 1987, Donald married Ruthanne Gebhardt.Don is survived by his brother Lawrence, age 92 of Fargo, his three sons and three grandchildren, Kristy Monson of Shoreline WA, Elizabeth Agerton of Bakersfield CA and Jonathan Monson of West Linn, OR. Children are Linda Koch and husband Dennis of Elmwood, Kan., Garry Sorrell and wife Betty of Sedalia, and Debra Phillips of Lincoln, Neb.In 1968, in Sedalia, he married Wanda Lewis, who resides of the home. Children are Linda Williams and husband Doug of Lebanon, Michael Barber of Lebanon, Donna Hendrickson of Spearman, Texas, Lori McCullough and husband David of Sedalia, David Sorrell and wife Deann of Columbia and Scott Sorrell and wife Missy of Rolla.Al lived many years in Monroe City where he worked at a hotel before he went to work for the Henderson Produce Company where he became plant manager.While working at Henderson’s, Al was drafted into the Army. He served his country honorably in the United States Army and was trained as a surgical technician and served in a medical unit for the 192nd Ordnance Battalion. He served in the South Pacific during the Second World War including the Battle of Okinawa. Al was the last surviving veteran of the company with whom he served.After the war, Al returned to his work at Henderson’s until he moved to Sedalia in 1965 where he worked for MFA, Swift and Company, and Central States Tool and Engine. Al worked at Central States until his full retirement in 1994.In his spare time, Al enjoyed working on cars and small engines, particularly lawn mowers. He called himself a “neighborhood mechanic” but others often referred to him as “Mr. Fix-It” because it seemed like he could repair just about anything.One of Al’s favorite roles in life was that of “Papa ...
