This is an opinion piece from MLive.com's Kyle AustinEAST LANSING -- Michigan State fans everywhere will no doubt spend this week indulging themselves in fantasies along these lines:Michigan State welcomes No. 2 Michigan into Spartan Stadium on Saturday as three-touchdown underdogs. The Spartans, motivated by the in-state rivalry, little brother, tent stakes or what have you, finally play a solid 60 minutes for the first time in weeks.Michigan, meanwhile, plays its worst game of the season. The Spartans eke out a win, fans storm the field to celebrate one of the biggest upsets in the history of the series.Michigan State insists it isn't pointing fingers amid five-game skidIt would be a huge morale boost for a group of players and coaches who are upset and frustrated. It would give Michigan State fans bragging rights (or, more accurately, trolling rights) for another year.And yet Michigan State would wake up on Sunday morning with the same problems it had on Friday.Sorry for the pitcher of cold water, but let's snap back to the real world...

Jill Marie Doll died peacefully in Denison, TX, on October 8, 2016, at the age of 69.  Jill is survived by her father, Andrew Townsend of East Lansing, MI, and wife, Carol; brother, Dr. Lee Townsend of East Lansing, MI, and wife, Marilyn; son, Christian Doll of Mansfield, TX, and wife, Jennifer; and grandson, Jackson Doll of Mansfield, TX. She is preceded in death by mother, Joanna Townsend; and brother, Terry Townsend. Jill was born on March 20, 1947, in San Antonio, TX, and was raised in Lansing, MI.  She moved to Texas and eventually settled in Arlington, TX. Jill welcomed one child into her home and set about teaching him to be loyal and work hard. Her son remembers her as a mother who always loved him unconditionally and who encouraged him to pursue his goals. Jill was a talented crafter and often could be found working on a new project. She enjoyed fellowship and spent many happy hours with friends and family while she was shopping, playing cards or Bingo, or having a margarita. She was a generous individual who took pleasure in gift-giving and never missed a celebration. She adored her grandson who always laughed...

June 14, 2016EAST LANSING - A funeral service for former Michigan State hockey coach and athletics director Ron Mason will be held on Thursday, June 16 at Munn Ice Arena. The funeral service will begin at 2 p.m. and will be preceded by a public viewing beginning at 11 a.m. on the ice at Munn.Parking for the visitation and service will be at Parking Ramp 5, located behind the Communication Arts Building, with shuttle service to Munn Ice Arena. Shuttles to Munn will begin at 10:30 a.m. and run until 4 p.m.Obituary for Ronald H. MasonPalm Beach Shores, Florida, formerly of Haslett, MichiganRonald H. Mason, Age 76, of Palm Beach Shores, Fla., died suddenly on June 13, 2016 in Haslett.Ron was born in Blyth, Ontario on January 14, 1940, the son of Harvey and Agnes Mason.
