Monday, March 06, 2017Y, she was the only child of the late Meta Mary and Henry August Pape. Following her mother's passing when she was age two, Loltia was raised by her mother's sister, Mary Sofia Pape.Lolita grew up in Flushing, Queens and Port Washington Long Island, New York. She enjoyed skating, skiing, boating, swimming, golf and painting. She was a woman of strong beliefs and feelings ahead of her time and had a big heart. Lolita was brought up to be an independent thinker, and a self-sufficient person. Her parents taught her how to paint and build things.She graduated from Green Mountain College in Vermont on June 13, 1955. She married George Gregory Anthos on Dec 11, 1955, having been married for 59 years until George's passing. They went on to have three sons who were by her side in her last days.In addition to being a great mother, she worked full time in engineering drafting roles in an office of all men. She also managed numerous ice rinks over the years and developed a skating school at Swinburne Park that continues today and had taught thousands of children ice skating.Lolita had a vision for her boys on what she wanted them to achieve in their lives. She had great focus, clarity, determination, integrity and good honest values that she taught her boys and lived by.She is survived by her sons: Gregory, Roger and Stephen; three grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and one great great-grandchild.Relatives and friends are invited to her funeral service at 2 p.m., Monday, March 6, at Steinbach and Reed Funeral Ho...
Monday, October 24, 2016Irene Jedrlinic, the mother of former Daily News reporter Nicholas Hirshon, has died of a heart attack. She was 68.Jedrlinic, who was born in Jackson Heights and grew up in Flushing, worked for 41 years for the Social Security Administration before retiring in 2013.She graduated from the High School of Performing Arts and Queens College before earning a master’s degree in English from Queens College in 1976. Her thesis was an analysis of the concept of fortune in Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales.She married Elliot Hirshon on Oct. 15, 1983, and lived with him in Forest Hills, Queens. The couple celebrated their 33rd wedding anniversary the day before Jedrlinic’s Oct. 16, death. Together they frequently attended shows on Broadway and the Public Theater. She saw the original Tony Award-winning productions of “Sweeney Todd,” “Nine,” “Fun Home” and “Hamilton” (twice).Once her son began rooting for the Mets and Islanders in 1999, Jedrlinic went to dozens of games at Shea Stadium, Citi Field, Nassau Coliseum and Barclays Center, including the NHL playoffs in 2013 and 2016, the 2013 MLB All-Star Game and the 2015 World Series.In recent years, while her son was earning...
Monday, September 26, 2016Branch and was the first daughter of the late Charles Nelson, Sr. and Ruth Nelson. She had much success being educated in the Long Branch public school system.During the year of 1961 she moved to Flushing, Queens, New York where she lived for a couple of years with her late Aunt Addie, Uncle Fred Whiting, Cousin Raymond Davis, all of whom are deceased, and her sister, Phyllis Crank. She worked in Manhattan at the time. After the death of her Aunt Addie, Barbara moved to 116th Street in Manhattan, NY where she continued to work and educate herself by enrolling in several secretarial classes at a local school in the City. On March 19, 1967 she married the late Fred Conway of New York. They were together for 31 years and lived in the Riverbend Housing with no children. She and her husband traveled a great deal to the Caribbean Islands and Europe. They spent two weeks in Brazzaville, the Congo in Africa. She also took her mother and youngest sister Diane to the Islands as well.In 1971 Barbara was hired by Off Track Betting (OTB) as an occupational employee in Manhattan, NY. After 28 years of service she retired in 1999.On May 2, 1982 Barbara became a member of the Beulah Baptist Church on West 130th Street in Manhattan. Monday, September 19, 2016He went to work, and he never came back," says his stepfather, Russell Mercer.Scott Kopytko's parents regularly visit a stone memorial at Mount St. Mary's Cemetery in Flushing, Queens. (Alex Welsh for NPR)Almost every morning, Mercer and Kopytko's mother take turns visiting the cemetery across from their son's old high school in the Queens borough of New York City. Under a young oak tree next to fading tombstones, they water pink flowers behind a small, square stone engraved for Kopytko."It's a place where we can go, me and my family, to talk to Scott. But there's nothing there," Mercer says. "We need some kind of DNA, some human remains, where you can go to and say, 'This is where Scott is.' "Fifteen years after the attacks, families of 40 percent of the World Trade Center victims have not received any remains of their loved ones.Death certificates have been issued for these 1,113 victims. That number does include some of the immigrants who were in the U.S. illegally and working in the twin towers during the attacks.
