The longtime chairman of the Anderson School District 1 Board of Trustees died at his home late Wednesday after a two-year battle with cancer.Alexander served on the board of the Williamston-based school district for 26 years. For 25 years, his elected colleagues repeatedly, and unanimously, chose him to lead."I think that speaks volumes about the kind of man and kind of leader he was," said District 1 Superintendent David Havird. "He had such a joy and passion for this role, and he believed in students and in their futures."Alexander's influence in the school district was immeasurable from going to leadership conferences to guiding the board through positive and difficult times."He exhibited great forethought and leadership. He knew how to handle situations and made all sides feel valued and included," said Nancy Upton, former vice chairwoman and now chairwoman of the board. "He was fair and just. He listened to everyone and was always objective."Through the years, Upton, who was voted onto the board along with Alexander in 1990, learned several important lessons in leadership from Alexander, she said, such as to never be satisfied and always strive to be better.He enjoyed supporting teachers and students in their endeavors, and always welcomed new comers to the district. Any time a newly hired teacher came to a board meeting, Alexander would say, "Welcome to ...

Polish heritage, dancing, camping, cooking and her Catholic faith.She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Donald Schellie; three sons, Rodney Kasubowski of Posen, Michael (Alison) Schellie of Williamston and Thomas (Kari) Schellie of Grand Haven; step-daughter, Susan Schellie of Alpena; five grandchildren, Joseph, Ashley, Jenna, Anthony and Elizabeth; and two sisters, Alice Modrzynski of Posen and Geraldine (Terry) Hahn of Alpena.She was preceded in death by her parents, Leo and Elizabeth (Bronikowski) Modrzynski.Visitation was at the Beck Funeral Home Sunday where the Rosary Sodality was led the Rosary followed by the Parish Wake Service with Sister Mary Michelz conducting. Visitation resumed Monday at St. Casimir Catholic Church until time of Mass with the Rev. Arthur Duchnowicz officiating.Betty Ann will always be loved, never forgotten and forever missed.Memorials may be given to Hospice of Michigan in memory of Betty Ann Schellie.Online condolences may be addressed through www.beckfuneralhome.org.
