Cremation services on the rise - New Philadelphia Times Reporter

Monday, July 04, 2016

Smith's funeral homes serve, Smith said he's not seeing a similar increase in cremations. Smith Funeral Homes operates Smith Funeral Home in Sugarcreek and Lebold-Smith Funeral Home in Bolivar.Smith said the cremation rate he's experiencing at his business is about 15 percent. Serving a strong customer base of Amish and Mennonite families, Smith said most of his clientele base place "a lot of value on seeing the deceased person" and would rather have the traditional funeral in which a body is buried.MisconceptionsIf a loved one is cremated, can there still be calling hours and a funeral service? Does cremation always cost less than a traditional burial? The answer funeral directors recently provided all had a common theme — it all depends on choice.Herzig-McKinnon said before a body is cremated, a family can still hold calling hours and services with the use of a rented or purchased casket. Graveside services can also take place with the cremated remains in an urn at the site of the burial. Some funeral homes offer different packages in which a variety of options can make the cost of cremation in line with a traditional burial.Nathan Douglas, a funeral director for Geib Funeral Home & Crematory, said it's all based on services. Like with a traditional burial, calling hours and services are optional. Some cremation packages can include a ceremonial casket, an urn and an urn vault. A direct cremation is a less expensive alternative and does not include calling hours or services. The process just entails cremating the individual and returning the cremated remains to the family. Douglas said he's worked with clients who have had $10,000 cremations and $10,000 burials. On the contrary, a cremation could cost $3,000.Some funeral homes offer keepsake items, such as DVD tributes, jewelry, plaques and other items."When you get down to it, cremation is not really any more cheaper than a traditional burial," Stewart said.Page 3 of 3 - Cremation processThe cremation process involves placing a body in a crematory chamber that is heated to about 1,650 degrees. Over two to four hours, the intense heat breaks down the body.Crematory operators at Geib Funeral Home & Crematory and Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory explained a metal tag with a unique number stays with the body inside the crematory and accompanies the remains to completely ensure identification and avoid confusion with any other cremated remains. Before being placed in the crematory chamber, the body is examined for any pacemakers or jewelry.T...
