Monday, March 27, 2017Tuesday in northeast Alabama. Police say one of the vehicles crossed the center line before the crash.Wilson says the woman’s 8-year-old daughter, Elizabeth “Libby” Patterson, ran in front of a car and was struck and killed about 30 minutes later. Police say the girl had just gotten home from school and wouldn’t have known about her mother’s death.Alabama state troopers are investigating both deaths, which happened about 7 miles (10 kilometers) apart on Alabama 117.
Monday, March 06, 2017Thursday.Dolores Alice Putz, best known as Lola, died Feb. 5, at the age of 97. She resided in Bellevue, Nebraska, and Ocala, with her son and his wife, Victor and Libby Turnipseed Putz.Lola Putz had roots in Johannesburg, the largest city in South Africa. It was there she completed training in dressmaking and millinery theory at Mrs. Brownlee’s School of Dressmaking. That would open the door for the charitable work related to sewing she later accomplished in Ocala.Putz was born July 10, 1919, to Alice and Leandro Comerma. While in Johannesburg, she met American mining engineer Henry Putz. They married June 21, 1938. Their children, Victor and June, were born in South Africa. It was the Mau Mau uprising in South Africa in the early 1950s that motivated Henry Putz to move his family to Ocala in August of 1952. Lola and the children came to America on a steamship. Henry was known for his hydroelectric work and did phosphate prospecting in Ocala and Dunnellon.“After a brief adjustment to her new life, she decided to repay the Ocala community for their hospitality," Victor Putz said about his mother. "My mother used her considerable sewing talents to distribute clothes, and later food, to those in need. Our garage became her warehouse. She later did this in connection with the Wesleyan Fellowship of the First United Methodis...
Monday, March 06, 2017Chief Teresa Deloach Reed will become eligible to receive a city pension upon her retirement.“The city does not comment on the leave status of employees,” Erica Terry Derryck, a spokeswoman for Mayor Libby Schaaf, said Tuesday when asked about the chief’s latest absence.Deloach Reed’s second leave in as many months went largely unnoticed until Monday, when Deputy Fire Chief Mark Hoffmann filled in as the acting chief at the City Hall swearing-in ceremony of new Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick.Deloach Reed has rarely been seen or heard from since the Ghost Ship fire claimed 36 lives on Dec. 2 and raised serious questions about the competence of the Fire Department’s inspections bureau, which had no records of ever having checked the converted warehouse for safety violations.Although no one is talking on the record about the chief’s future, many are eyeing Sunday — the day the 59-year-old Deloach Reed will have served the five years needed to become vested in Oakland’s pension system.Once vested, Deloach Reed will be eligible for a pension equaling 15 percent of her $241,000-a-year base pay — or $36,150 annually. Add in the $127,000 annual pension she already receives from her 23 years with the San Jose Fire Department, and her combined retirement would come to $163,150 a year.Sources at City Hall and those close to the chief tell us Deloach Reed has been fuming over what she felt was was the shoddy t...
