Monday, June 19, 2017HUNTSVILLE, Texas — Arlyn Hubert Simms, age 80 years young, passed away the morning of May 23, 2017 at home in Huntsville, Texas, with Carol and family by his side.Arlyn was born Jan. 6, 1937 in Malta to Hubert and Marjorie Simms. He grew up on the family owned ranch, which began his love for horses, cattle and rodeo. During Arlyn's senior year of high school, he qualified in the calf roping for the National High School Rodeo Finals in Harrison, Nebraska, where he ended up placing 2nd.Arlyn was drafted into active duty in March of 1959 and was stationed in El Paso, Texas until March 1963. A few years and moves later, he settled in Arlee, Montana where through a prior marriage Arlyn had five kids: Patty, Todd, Billie, Sheila and Katy. During that time Arlyn was very well known and respected as one of the best in heavy equipment operation and construction in both Montana and Wyoming. Because of his knowledge and skill, Arlyn was hired to teach heavy equipment classes at the Missoula Vocational Technical Center for several years.Rodeo was the love of his life until he met Carol Stevenson. Saturday, April 08, 2017Etta Eveline Rich and Lot Smith Udy. She was the sixth of seven children and she had a twin brother, Lyle. She rode horseback to the Elba grade school each day. She attended Malta High School and when her parents sold the ranch, she finished her schooling at Burley High School.On Nov. 29, 1944, she married Wayne May in Burley, Idaho. They were blessed with five children, Linda, Gay Dawn, Marlin, Marshall, and Mervin. They worked together farming for the first few years of their marriage. In 1952, they leased the original Farmer’s Corner store just south of Burley. Two years later, they built a new store across the street and continued in the grocery and fuel business until November of 1963, when they sold the store and purchased Valley Livestock Commission Company in Rupert, Idaho. This business was very successful for Wayne and Loleta, due in part, to many faithful buyers and livestock producers, as well as dedicated employees. Wayne became ill in the fall of 1972, and passed away at age 49 from a malignant brain tumor. Loleta continued to run the business until the property was sold in 1983.Loleta married Albion rancher, Donald Merrill, in September of 1983, and moved to Albion, Idaho. Once again, she was on a ranch and she loved the Albion Valley. Don passed away in 2001, and she continued to live on the ranch until buying a home in Burley in 2014.Loleta was active in many organizations. Left to cherish Linda's memory are her sister Barbara Chalk of Dennard and Roger Garland of Malta, Illinois. Linda was preceded in death by her father James W. Garland; her mother Orpha Morgan Garland; brothers James Garland, Paul Gene Garland, William "Bill" Garland, Travis Garland, Tom Garland and Douglas Garland; and a sister Betty Lawson.The family will hold a private memorial service at a later date.
