Monday, August 01, 2016Flower Montgomery in Milwaukee in 1936.She grew up in Wauwatosa, earned a journalism degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, married and later was divorced from Clyde Bauer.Living mainly in Whitefish Bay, she raised three children while nurturing her reporting career in a male-dominated world. Bauer thrived, pecking out stories on tight deadline — typing with a single finger on one hand and wearing her trademark visor atop her head."There was a lot of pressure for ladies to do softer news, but Fran always had a passion for meat and potato journalism," recalled colleague Meg Kissinger. After retiring in 2000, Bauer poured herself into community causes, painting, writing, church projects and the lives of friends and family."She was an original feminist who worked very hard to empower women in all things she did," said Cathy Kehoe, who — in part because of her mother's work — is now an advocate for seniors with dementia, and their families. Two years ago, Bauer moved from Whitefish Bay to a condo in Shorewood. There she helped establish a memory cafe, where people with dementia and their caregivers socialize and share stories.Art was a big part of her life and her public service. She studied painting under well-known local artists, traveled widely with art history in mind and donated many works."Last year it was the 'summer of mom' in my garden," recalled another daughter, Nora Biersack. "She painted whatever was in bloom."She doted on her grandchildren, including long stretches of time in Florida visiting her son Steve and family.Fran Bauer is survived by daughters Cathy Kehoe (Ed Krause), Nora (Mark) Biersack and son Steve Bauer (Dana Hunter), four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.Fran BauerThe memorial service for Fran Bauer is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday at Immanuel Presbyterian Church, 1100 N. Astor St., Milwaukee 53202.The family will greet friends after the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Shorewood Foundation, Memory Cafe SRC, mailed to Shorewood Senior Resource Center or Core El Centro in Milwaukee.About Dave UmhoeferDave Umhoefer covers local politics and government as part of the PolitiFact Wisconsin and Watchdog teams.
