Monday, June 26, 2017June 19, 2017 a few days short of his 80th birthday. Ron is survived by Carol, his wife of 60 years of Disney, Oklahoma; sister Beverley Henderson of McCall, Idaho; daughter, Kim Godber of Wrightwood, California; and son, Ron Tebbs Jr. of Disney, Oklahoma and owner of Ron’s Heat and Air in Vinita. Six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren lovingly remember him as, “Grandpa Santa” for his warm wide smile, white beard and jolly disposition. Ron lived a full and active life, teaching Advanced Biology for 38 years until 1997 in the same classroom where his own father taught Chemistry before him and as President of the Whittier High School District Teachers’ Association. After retirement, Ron established himself as an A-flight golfer in the Men’s Golf Association at PGA West in La Quinta, California and served as Treasurer of the Homeowner’s Association there. Ron is remembered for his devotion to family, even when personally recruited twice by Michael Jackson to head a proposed Olympic track and field training camp for black athletes. He worried that the young star was a “flash in the pan” unable to reliably match his teaching salary. He never regretted turning down the offer, though his family was in disbelief. His many students regard “Mr. Tebbs” as their most memorable teacher who made learning difficult material interesting. He once quipped, “I tea...

Monday, June 19, 2017David of Sedalia, David Sorrell and wife Deann of Columbia and Scott Sorrell and wife Missy of Rolla.Al lived many years in Monroe City where he worked at a hotel before he went to work for the Henderson Produce Company where he became plant manager.While working at Henderson’s, Al was drafted into the Army. He served his country honorably in the United States Army and was trained as a surgical technician and served in a medical unit for the 192nd Ordnance Battalion. He served in the South Pacific during the Second World War including the Battle of Okinawa. Al was the last surviving veteran of the company with whom he served.After the war, Al returned to his work at Henderson’s until he moved to Sedalia in 1965 where he worked for MFA, Swift and Company, and Central States Tool and Engine. Al worked at Central States until his full retirement in 1994.In his spare time, Al enjoyed working on cars and small engines, particularly lawn mowers. He called himself a “neighborhood mechanic” but others often referred to him as “Mr. Fix-It” because it seemed like he could repair just about anything.One of Al’s favorite roles in life was that of “Papa ‘Rel.” He was a beloved grandfather and was even called Papa ‘Rel by his grandchildren’s friends.He is also survived by his grandchildren, Lucas Koch, Lance Koch, Kady Roberts, Lori Sorrell, Justin Sorrell, Lacey Belt, Shelby Teeter, Andrew Sorrell, Dana Kizzier, Jamie Malone, Lisa Shubert, India McCullough, Paige Reque, Kearn McCullough, Abbey Sorrell, Jack Sorrell, Reid Sorrell, Justin Sorrell, Tristah Sorrell, Kyndra Sorrell, Thomas Sorrell; and many great grandchildren.In addition to his parents, step-mother Bertie Sorrell, and his first wife Donna, he was also preceded in death by an infant son, Larry Sorrell; two brothers, Gilbert Sorrell and Terry Sorrell; one son-in-law, Randy Hendrickson.Memorial contributions are suggested to Crossroads Cemetery in care of the funeral chapel.

Saturday, June 10, 2017NAACP and the American Civil Liberties Union Las Vegas chapters have come together in a joint effort to call for reform of the department.An internet petition created by McCoy calls on Metro to join Henderson and North Las Vegas in banning the use of neck restraints by officers. As of Saturday, the petition had racked up 291 of the needed 500 signatures.The petition also demands complete transparency from the department during its investigation.“The one thing that brings about unrest is no information or a lack of information and lack of knowledge,” McCoy said. “We’re asking officials to help us understand this because if there are things about the investigation process that I don’t know, that means an average person wouldn’t know.”Days after Brown’s in-custody death, McMahill confirmed that the chokehold used by Lopera is not sanctioned or approved.“When you have adrenaline flowing like that, I don’t know how you ascertain the proper technique to perform the authorized form of the chokehold,” McCoy said Saturday evening. “At the end of the day, you’re still choking someone and you have the potential to kill.”Meanwhile, the Brown family has stayed out of the media spotlight since his death.
