Winchester's Gleason now Grand Master of Masons - Woburn Daily Times

Monday, February 06, 2017

Though he’s only been on the job 37 days, Winchester resident Paul Gleason knows he has a lot of work to do.On Dec. 27, Gleason was installed as the 89th Grand Master of the Freemasons of Massachusetts. He follows in the footsteps of past Grand Masters such as Paul Revere and General Joseph Warren. The office of Grand Master is a volunteer position; the Grand Master is elected and installed on an annual basis. Tradition dictates that first-year Grand Masters are re-elected for a second and third year before another new Grand Master is elected.Speaking of tradition, Gleason was installed on Dec. 27 because that is the feast day of John the Evangelist, a Roman Catholic and Anglican feast (For the record, Freemasons don’t have to believe in God/Jesus, but they must believe in something). As Grand Master, Gleason presides over more than 26,000 Masons and 225 lodges (in 150 communities) throughout the Commonwealth. The Grand Lodge of Masons in Massachusetts was chartered in 1733, following the establishment of the Grand Lodges of England in 1717 and Ireland...

Community Rallies Around Students, Parents - CapeNews.net

James and Owen on December 23.School officials also opened up the high school to students and parents before wakes for both students. James’s wake was held Monday at Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home on Main Street, while Owen’s wake was held yesterday at the same funeral home.Falmouth Public Schools Superintendent Nancy R. Taylor said the high school offers a natural setting for parents and students to congregate in the wake of the tragedy.“Their coaches are there; their principal is there; their counselors are there,” she said. “It’s a very safe, nurturing environment.”Falmouth High School hockey coach Paul P. Moore said members of the hockey team came together for a team skate at the Falmouth Ice Arena on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. While it remains uncertain how the team will proceed with the rest of its season, he said getting together was “the first step in the healing process” for the team.“They got on the ice, and all of a sudden, you heard the laughter,” coach Moore said. “Hockey is a sanctuary to them.”The Reverend Benjamin D. Feldott, who is the senior pastor at Cape Cod Church on Nathan Ellis Highway, said laughter is an important and natural part of the grieving process.“People need to know that it’s okay to cry, but that it’s also okay to laugh,” he said. “Part of this whole process is about ‘We’re going to celebrate their lives.’ ”Cape Cod Church opened up its teen center to members of its youth group program last Friday evening. As at the high school, the goal was to offer students a safe environment in which to talk and be in the company of others.“It was just an opportunity to be with people, because we’re all better together,” Mr. Feldott said. “We’re not made to live in isolation.”Staff at the Gus Canty Community Center made the center available to students, parents, and members of the community following James’s funeral service on Tuesday, December 27. Food was donated to the center, courtesy of Steve’s Pizzeria, La Cucina Sul Mare, and other local restaurants, interim recreation director Joseph E. Olenick said.“We just tried to do something for the students,” he said. “We wanted to give them a place where they could all come together.”On Wednesday, Mr. Olenick estimated that 50 to 60 high school students came by the center to play basketball. He said he expected about the same number of students to visit the center yesterday, when visiting hours were held for Owen at Chapman, Cole & Gleason.Free counseling services have also been made available to students, parents, and members of the community in the days since the accident. Carol A. DiFalco, a school counselor at Falmouth Academy, is one of four local counselors who together make up the Falmouth Grief and Loss Support Team. The volunteer team offers free outreach and support to members of the community in times of crisis.Ms. DiFalco said she has received calls from parents since the accident, m...
