Mary Louise Gammon Cooper (Died: April 14, 2017) - Hiawatha World

Tuesday, April 18, 2017

Ladies Bible Class and Junior High. She was treasurer for several years and song leader. She grew up in the Ottway community, except for one year, 1944-45, where she lived in the “atomic city,” Oak Ridge, a city of 75,000 people that sprang up almost overnight. Oak Ridge was “a secret city,” where the atom bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, in August 1945, ending the war, was developed and made. Her school friends were from many states and she remembered that year fondly.Growing up she loved riding horses, music, singing and Tennessee Vols football. Her daddy took her to her first game in 1946 and from then on she was a “big orange” fan, seeing many games, home and away, and bowl games. She looked forward to the beautiful falls in East Tennessee and Tennessee football.Mary graduated from Greeneville Business School in 1951, then was employed in Rock Hill, S.C.In 1956 she started working at Pet Inc. (milk), retiring in 1995.She loved to travel, seeing new places and familiar ones. The ocean from Key West to Nova Scotia, the Pacific and the Mediterranean Sea and spending time at Surfside, S.C., with family were special. She felt blessed to have a son: Mike Cooper and his family, wife, Joette, and their children, to whom she was “GranMary,” Ben Cooper, Rae Elizabeth Cooper and Jake McAmis; great-grandchildren: Kennedy Tyler and Boone and Knox McAmis, who all survive her. She is also survived by several cousins, including two special cousins: Sadie Weems and Martha Fletcher; and a sister-in-law: Josephine Cooper. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 5-7p.m. Tuesday at Doughty-Stevens Funeral Home with the funeral service following at 7 p.m. in the chapel.
