Monday, June 19, 2017Rocket, finishing after 38 years with the Shuttle program in 1993.The patriarch of three generations of pilots, Clyde instructed his wife, Sara, in 1966; his son, Scott, now a Boeing 747 captain for Delta Airlines on his 16th birthday; and his grandson, Nevada, currently a captain in the United States Army flying the Blackhawk helicopter on his 16th birthday, as well.Clyde Shelton’s legacy is firmly established in those lives he touched. He was a genuine aviation professional. He was a man whose integrity, character, food nature and sincere interest in his students defined him as a man of competent humility.For his extraordinary and endearing contributions to aviation, Mr. Shelton was elected into the Tennessee Aviation Hall of Fame in 2010 and the Alabama Aviation Hall of Fame in 2016.Clyde will be missed by all he touched during his long historical career, but most importantly by his wife, Sara; his sons, Steve and Scott (Gwen); grandchildren, Ashley Davis (Johnny), Chase (Ashley), Nevada, Whitney (Marcus), Richard (Chelsea) and Cooper.Additionally, he will be missed by his great-grandchildren, Emma Grace, Anna Elizabeth, Abby, Walker, Ryder, Gunner, Ronin, and especially by his sister, Jodeen Steelman, and his brother-in-law, Ron (Dianah) West.Mr. Shelton was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Hamilton and Louella Shelton, and his brother, Thomas Owen Shelton.Visitation with the family will be held Wednesday, June 14, at 1 p.m. until time of service at 4 p.m. at Higgins Funeral Home with Bro. John Hathcock officiating. There will also be a very special funeral send off at the Madison County Executive Airport in Meridianville, Ala. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Michelle Dickey.A graduate of Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi, he was a member of Alpha Epsilon Delta Honors Society. After graduating from The University of Mississippi Medical School in 1962, Dr. Blanton practiced medicine for 55 years. He was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Fellow of the Academy of Otolaryngology, Paul Harris Fellow and the President of the Central Medical Association in Jackson, Mississippi. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the Tennessee Medical Association, the Mississippi State Medical Association, and the Southern Medical Association. He loved his patients and cared for them with a healer’s heart.Ted served in the Navy from 1961-1974 where he earned the rank of Commander. He received many commendations for his exemplary service. The discipline and patriotism he learned in the Navy never left him as his family and friends can attest.He was an artist and musician. He played the banjo, drums, guitar, and piano. He was a member of the band The Docs of Dixieland, which cut records and played at events such as The Satellite Ball in Washington D.C. (He was known to dance the night away with his wife at Presidential Inaugural Balls.) Since moving to Shelbyville, he has enjoyed nearly weekly meetings with the R.O.M.E.O. Club (retired old men eating out), reading books suggested by friends and family, and recounting the stories of his childhood and bragging about his grandchildren to anyone with two good ears.Throughout his life, he was an active member of the Church. A Mass dedicated to her was followed by an impromptu candlelight vigil.Nelson’s father, James Nelson, was a Port Authority of New York and New Jersey police officer killed in the Sept. 11 attacks in Manhattan. The 40-year-old was killed while trying to rescue people trapped in the World Trade Center. His obituary said he was survived by two daughters, 11-year-old Anne and 5-year-old Caitlin.School officials said counseling services were being provided.‘‘The SHU community is mourning today,’’ the school said in a statement Monday. ‘‘We ask that during this time you give Caitlin’s family and the members of the SHU community privacy while they grieve.’’According to her LinkedIn page, Caitlin was certified in youth mental health first aid and volunteered at the Resiliency Center of Newtown, a nonprofit group that provides free counseling and other services to people affected by the 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School that killed 20 children and six educators.Funeral services have not been announced.
Monday, April 03, 2017SHOW ARTICLE -- HYDE — Two people were killed and one person was injured in a two-vehicle crash Saturday.At 9:53 a.m. on April 1, the Delta County Sheriff’s Department responded to a personal injury accident with entrapment at the intersection of U.S. 2 and 41 and I Rd. One of the vehicles, which was being driven by Gerald Grenfell, 84, had pulled onto U.S. 2 and 41 into the path of a westbound vehicle. Gerald was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the vehicle he was driving, Rosellen Grenfell, 80, died after being flown to U.P. Health System in Marquette. The driver of the westbound vehicle was treated for injuries and released at the scene.Alcohol and speeding are not believed to be factors in the crash. Assisting the Delta County Sheriff’s Department at the scene of the crash were the Michigan State Police, Escanaba Public Safety, Hannahville Tribal Police, Ford River Fire Department, Bark River Fire Department, U.P. Health System, and Valley Med Flight. The crash remains under investigation.Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Crawford Funeral Home. Visitation will be on Wednesday, April 5, fro...
Monday, March 27, 2017Howland Local Schools. Lynda first began teaching 4th grade at Glenn Primary School and then continued teaching 4th grade at H.C. Mines in Howland, where she retired in 2013. Lynda was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Ohio Education Association, North Eastern Ohio Education Association and the Howland Retired Teachers. She was also a member of the Trumbull New Theatre. Lynda was a certified paramedic and was also an EMT instructor for many years, belonging to the Johnston Township Volunteer Fire Department. She was also a lifeguard on the Ohio side of Pymatuning State Park. Lynda enjoyed traveling abroad, doing ceramics and belonged to a ceramics club. She also enjoyed china painting and making dolls with her mother, Irene. Lynda was a member of SS. Peter & Paul Byzantine Catholic Church in Warren and was a member of its Altar & Rosary Society. She was also a member of the St. Benedictine Auxiliary of the Benedictine Monastery at SS. Peter & Paul Byzantine Catholic Church. Lynda also attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in McDonald, where her brother is pastor. Lynda will be deeply missed by her loving family, her husband of 37 years, George Allen Grove, whom she married June 23, 1979; two daughters, Sarah (Michael) Muccio of Clinton, N.Y. and Rebecca (Robert) Riley of Norfolk, Va.; her siblings, Dr. Deborah Brienz of Duncan, British Columbia, Fr. She also served on the boards of the Winona State University Foundation, where she was heavily involved in planning for the Education Village, and the Winona Area Public Schools Foundation. Donna was a member and held offices in the following: the Southeastern Minnesota Reading Council, Phi Delta Kappa Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma, Chapter CS of the PEO Sisterhood, the D.A.R., Sequoia Club, and the Ruskin Study Club. She attended the Blandin Community Leadership Program, as well. It must be mentioned that Donna was an avid bridge player.For these and other professional and community contributions, Donna was the recipient of many awards, including: Winona Teacher of the Year, inclusion in Who’s Who Among American Teachers, the Thomas Stark Award from the United Way, the Celebrate Literacy Award from the International Reading Association, the Athena Award for women in leadership from the Winona Chamber of Commerce, the Ben and Adith Miller Tribute from Winona Health, Rotary International Distinguished Club President (awarded in Barcelona, Spain), a Certificate of Appreciation from the city of Winona for increasing literacy among community youth, and a certificate from the Minnesota Senate for promoting literacy. Her name was also included in Who’s Who of American Women, the international Who’s Who of Professional Business Women, and Outstanding Young Women of America.Beyond her professional and civic contributions, Donna will be remembered as an energetic, witty, loving and giving friend to many people locally and around the world. She never stopped learning through her many activities, friendships, and her extensive travel to Europe, India, Australia and all over the world and United States. It must be mentioned that Donna was an avid bridge player.For these and other professional and community contributions, Donna was the recipient of many awards, including: Winona Teacher of the Year, inclusion in Who’s Who Among American Teachers, the Thomas Stark Award from the United Way, the Celebrate Literacy Award from the International Reading Association, the Athena Award for women in leadership from the Winona Chamber of Commerce, the Ben and Adith Miller Tribute from Winona Health, Rotary International Distinguished Club President (awarded in Barcelona, Spain), a Certificate of Appreciation from the city of Winona for increasing literacy among community youth, and a certificate from the Minnesota Senate for promoting literacy. Her name was also included in Who’s Who of American Women, the international Who’s Who of Professional Business Women, and Outstanding Young Women of America.Beyond her professional and civic contributions, Donna will be remembered as an energetic, witty, loving and giving friend to many people locally and around the world. She never stopped learning through her many activities, friendships, and her extensive travel to Europe, India, Australia and all over the world and United States. Donna’s willingness to host myriad public and private events, her generosity of spirit as well as treasure, love of educating children (even teaching them to swim), her ready laugh, her appreciation of beauty and humanity will all be missed by a community that has benefited from her full and benevolent life.
