Some of the participants repeat from Lynden’s service.Historian Andrew Kaiser will speak of his research on the Greenwood Cemetery and the Greenwood community.After a 21-gun salute, echo taps will be played by Meridian seventh grade lead trumpeter Michael Bender and Louws.The Lynden VFW post is also partnering with the Lynden Tractor Supply store, 1898 Front St., to host a Salute Our Troops event on Saturday, May 27, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Expect a barbecue, kids’ activities and displays.• With over 1,700 veterans’ flags flying on the grounds, Greenacres Memorial Park is always a highly colorful and patriotic scene on Memorial Day at the corner of Axton and Northwest roads. Activities go from noon to 3 p.m. Designated parking is on the north side.The Mount Baker Toppers men’s chorus is one musical participant this year, starting at noon. Another performer is country music artist Aaron Crawford.The main remembrance ceremony is at 2 p.m., with wreaths laid for each of the U.S. military branches. Col. Wes Weston is the master of ceremonies, and U.S. Navy Chief Don Thompson is the keynote speaker.Also there will be a flag delivery by a Department of Homeland Security helicopter, the unveiling of a new World War I memorial and a dove release. Free hot dogs and refreshments are provided by Hemplers, Franz and The Woods Coffee. Expect kids’ activities and crafts. Feel free to bring your own chair.

Monday, May 01, 2017And we don’t know how to effectively restrict access to firearms by those with serious mental illness.”After a gunman fatally shot 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., in December 2012, President Barack Obama called on the Centers for Disease Control to investigate gun violence, but a Republican-controlled Congress, under pressure from the firearms industry, would not fund the research.“Research could have been continued on gun violence without infringing on the rights of gun owners,” Mr. Dickey reiterated in 2015, “in the same fashion that the highway industry continued its research without eliminating the automobile.”“All this time that we have had, we would’ve found a solution, in my opinion,” Mr. Dickey told National Public Radio in 2015. “And I think it’s a shame that we haven’t.”His son Ted said he died from complications of Parkinson’s disease in Pine Bluff, Ark., the city where he had been born.Jay Woodson Dickey Jr. was born on Dec. 14, 1939, to Jay and Margaret Dickey. His father was a lawyer.He attended Hendrix College in Arkansas and graduated from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville in 1961 with a bachelor’s degree.
