Howard McComas, owner of McComas Funeral Home in Abingdon, said he was asked recently by someone in the community: "What do we do with our American flag after it has become tattered?"That question prompted McComas, with help from local American Legion posts, to find a viable solution: a collection box for old and worn American flags."I had seen something similar to this in other parts of the country and saw a need for it in our community," McComas said Wednesday, the day after the traditional observance of Flag Day.McComas Funeral Home and American Legion posts' officials met to discuss how to implement the flag retirement program.Mailboxes were purchased from a mailbox supply company and an American flag wrap was placed on them by the local company, Big House Signs, in Havre de Grace.The boxes were installed a few weeks ago at Bel Air American Legion Post 39 on Hickory Avenue and the Patrick Dailey-Mark Logsdon Memorial Service Post 17 on Edgewood Road in Edgewood by Edsel Spellman."Folks can just pull up out front and place their o...

Edwin Guinn who had only but a short time in this world.She is survived by her five daughters who are heartbroken: Mary Lynne May and husband, Mike of Erwin, Donna Hudgens and husband, David of Abingdon, VA, Joy Tipton of Erwin, Leslie Stevens and husband, Craig of Kingsport, Christen Wilson of Erwin; I hope her grandchildren: Shelley Edens, Mary Anna Peterson, Shawn Simons, Porsche Rice, Brandon Bradley, Taylor Ramsey, Shiann Stevens, Averi Stevens, Jude Stevens, Heath Wilson, Dustin Edwards and Trinity Wilson; great grandchildren: Sydney Edens, Gracie Edens, Linnie Edens, Alexandra Peterson, Ryan Peterson, Ethan Peterson, K. J. Koester, Lexus Keever and Gabbie Bradley and great-great grandchild, Ki Koester, will know how much she loved them.It’s hard to say goodbye to her. We can’t imagine life without her. William Marshall Edwards III, age 37, of Middle River, passed away on Jan. 1, 2017. Born in Havre de Grace, he was the son of William M. Edwards Jr. of Abingdon and the late Linda Jane (Smith) Miller.He worked in home construction and loved family gatherings, Sunday dinners and spending time with his daughter, Cece. He also loved picking on his sisters and watching football, especially the Baltimore Ravens. In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife, Randi O. Edwards; his daughter, Cecilia Edwards of Middle River; siblings, Cyle J. Allio of Abingdon, Connie M. Edwards of Edgewood, Eden M. Allio of Aberdeen, Evonna M. Allio of Abingdon and Tina Ray of Abingdon; and grandparents, John and Sheba Smith of Street. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
