Monday, March 27, 2017AMHERST — The community is mourning the passing of a local police officer. Nathan Berry, a senior patrolman with the Amherst Police Department, died unexpectedly at his Hopkinton residence on Sunday. “Officer Berry was a talented and dedicated public servant who was well respected by his peers,” said a statement from Amherst police. Berry, 42, served as the supervisor of the agency’s motorcycle unit, and volunteered his time with the New Hampshire Police Cadet Training Academy, according to the statement. “Nathan will be remembered for his kindheartedness, outgoing personality and sense of humor,” states his obituary. During his time with the Amherst Police Department, Berry was one of several police officers who was recognized during the 2011 New Hampshire Congressional Law Enforcement award ceremony for his work in helping to apprehend Steven Spader and Christopher Gribble for their roles in the 2009 murder of Kimberly Cates and the attack on her daughter, Jaimie Cates, at their Mont...

Monday, January 16, 2017Cape Cod, where kids would not have had a soccer season without his generosity.He’d earned his degree at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in finance, but so enjoyed working for an after-school program and refereeing kids’ soccer that he had recently decided to become an elementary school teacher instead of a businessman. He was supposed to start at Fitchburg State University in February.He loved his family’s rescue dog, a mixed-breed named Rocky, and was close with his family.And he was always up to some adventure. He snowboarded and skied. He traveled all over Europe and spent 72 days on a leadership training program in the Yukon in 2011.Sally Holden can’t understand what happened Sunday. Her son was so experienced, so responsible. He had so many plans for the future.When rescuers found Holden, it was too late at night to move him. The temperature was dropping toward zero, and he was exposed on the windswept rock. After graduating from Walpole High School, he earned a bachelor’s degree from UMass-Amherst and a law degree from Syracuse University,” the obituary says.Kay had a very productive life.Kay had worked as an attorney. “In that position he was employed as a Supervisory Contracting Officer as a civilian for the U.S. Air Force at Hanscom Air Force Base. He was a member of the National Contract Management Association and the Massachusetts Bar Association. He was known for his hard work, dedication, attention to detail and strong work ethic,” said the obituary.In his free time, said the obituary, “he enjoyed running, skiing, listening to music, and attending Crossway Christian Church. Dan had a smile that could light up a room. His desire to be challenged and his quest for adventure lead to his participation on the reality show, Survivor. He also successfully skied Tuckerman’s Ravine and completed his first half marathon.” Kay’s LinkedIn site said he was currently Senior Regulatory Advisor & Assistant Lab Ethics Officer at MIT Lincoln Laboratory in Massachusetts; the company declined to immediately comment but said it would run questions through its lawyer.Those who knew Kay and fans mourned his loss on Twitter.I just saw that fellow #survivor alum Dan Kay of Gabon passed away unexpectedly on NYE.
