Stallings, Sr. In addition to his mother, Mr. Stallings is survived by his daughter, Sheila Hicks and husband, Eric of Chatham, Va.; his sons, Michael Stallings of Eden, N.C., and Charlie Stallings of Danville; his sister, Sherry Cook and husband, Steve of Pelham, N.C.; his brothers, Dwayne Stallings of Pelham and Mike Godfrey of Yukon, Oklahoma; and his grandchildren, Colten Ross, Brantley Hicks, and Dylan Stallings. In addition to his father, Mr. Stallings was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Eva Haymore Moss and Forest Haymore. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 26, 2017, at Norris Mt. Hermon Chapel, with the Rev. Michael Kent officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2:30 until 3:30 p.m. prior to the service, and at other times at his mother's home, 236 Beavers Mill Road, Apt. B, Danville, VA 24540. Adrene Pearson Cummins, age 82, of Danville, passed away on Wednesday,February 8, 2017, at Chatham Health and Rehabilitation Center in Chatham. She was born on December 4, 1934, in Catchings, Miss., the daughter of the late Marvin Pearson and the late Sallie Seale Pearson. She was married to the late Charles Kenneth Cummins Sr. She was a member of Stokesland United Methodist Church. She is survived by a son, Charles Cummins and his wife, Dara of Loudon, Tenn.; a daughter, Terry Hudson and her husband, Artie of Chatham, Va.; a sister, Betty Perry and her husband, Jake of Greenville, Miss.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. With the help of neighbors and family, Marion Thomas saved most of her clothes and furniture.... Dr. Donald Chatham retired. "Dr. Chatham, if I could collect a dollar for every diaper change and bottle I fed to the babies you delivered, I wouldn't have to continue to pound these floors "til 65 to retire," Nurse Doris S. Ruble wrote in the program as a tribute to Dr. Chatham. Monday, January 02, 2017So far this year, Georgia DAs have announced they will seek death against eight defendants in three murder cases. This includes a case against four Chatham County gang members in the killing of a 24-year-old man in September.Meanwhile, with this year’s nine executions, Georgia put more condemned killers to death than any other state in the country. The four other states that carried out executions in 2016 were: Texas, with seven; Alabama, with two; and Florida and Missouri with one each. With 58 men on Georgia’s death row, executions here could continue at a steady pace for years to come.Yet this year’s U.S. total of 20 executions marked the lowest number nationwide in a quarter-century, according to a recent report released by the Death Penalty Information Center in Washington. Also, the 30 death sentences imposed in the United States this year represent a 39 percent drop from last year’s 49 death sentences, which at that time was the lowest total in four decades.Voting For LifeGeorgia juries are increasingly reluctant to impose the ultimate penalty.This year, two juries in Fulton County and one in Newton County were asked by prosecutors to impose death sentences against defendants they’d just found guilty of capital murder. Each time, the juries unanimously voted for sentences of life without parole.The most recent trial took place this fall in the case against Charmon Sinkfield. Sinkfield was convicted in October in the fatal shooting of former boxing champion Vernon Forrest during a 2009 robbery at a gas station in Atlanta’s Mechanicsville neighborhood. The Fulton County jury spent less than 30 minutes deliberating before arriving at the life-without-parole sentence.Jerry Word, who heads the state’s capital defender office, said his trial teams conduct early intervention programs once it becomes clear a murder defendant could face a capital prosecution. Don Logana, an investigative reporter and morning anchor at WTOC-TV in Savannah, was killed in a car crash about 4 a.m.The Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department's Major Accident Investigation Team was investigating on the South Carolina side of the Talmadge Bridge, where police told the Savannah Morning News that a blue pick-up truck and a red four-door vehicle were involved in a head-on crash.The news broke just hours after Logana reported on another tragic death, of a master firefighter who died shortly after rescuing people in the Savannah River. About 50 people had fallen in the water when a loading dock collapsed. Before WTOC 11, Logana began his career in his hometown of Syracuse, New York, at WIXT-TV. He started as an intern and rose to the ranks of producer and reporter before moving to Watertown, New York, to become reporter and anchor at WWTI-TV.Logana had worked at WTOC for more than a decade and started anchoring the morning news with Cyreia Sandlin after Mike Manhatton lost his battle with cancer in 2014.
