It’s been a long-hour project for us here, to get the place up and running.”Jordan said the downtown Emporia location is the perfect place for the new history center.“We could not have picked a better spot,” he said “This is the action area of downtown Emporia. The DK 200 is here, the Granada Theatre, the Emporia Arts Council, the Emporia Chamber of Commerce, the CVB, new businesses, Casa Ramos, Tim Mohn and Gravel City — we’re all right here and it’s a very exciting place to be.”The new center will allow the Lyon County Historical Society to hold more programming and adds additional space for showcasing artifacts.“We’ll actually be able to do a lot more programming because of our space,” said Lisa Soller, curator, exhibit manager and exhibit coordinator. “Starting in January, we want to have a monthly program called ‘History Happy Hour’ that’ll be a different variety of topics like people who went on to do great things and went on to be nationally- or internationally-known. Or we could also do certain events about different businesses or buildings.“We’ll also be able to do a lot more school programs — because we have the space — we’ll be able to accommodate 200 - 250 students at a time through all four floors. So we’ll be able to do some much grander things here at the history center.”Soller said one of the artifacts the historical society wasn’t able to display in the past is a blue wall featured on the second floor of the new center.“We have a stage backdrop from a one-room school and it almost takes up an entire wall,” Soller said. “It’s from the 1940s and the colors are brilliant. It was in the attic of the old location. They displayed it once and that was it, so we really wanted people to see it. Monday, August 29, 2016Al was an avid tennis player, fisherman, traveler and birder. He married Lynda Byrd Briscoe in 2003 in McLean, Virginia. He is survived by his wife, Lynda; three sons, the Hon. W. Allan Sharrett of Emporia, Virginia, David H. Sharrett and The Rev. Michael C. Sharrett, both of Lynchburg, Virginia; three stepdaughters, Amanda Briscoe Amodo, Jessica Briscoe Coleman and Dana Briscoe Duke; seven grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.The family will receive friends from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, September 2, 2016 at Bucktrout Funeral Home, 4124 Ironbound Rd. Williamsburg. Monday, August 15, 2016He joined Rock Church and served faithfully for many years. He was honored to have been taught by Bishops John and Anne Gimenez. Percy established Living Waters Rock Church in Emporia, Va., serving as pastor for 20 years.He had a passion for sports and loved golf and the friendships that it brought. Percy cherished his mighty prayer breakfast warriors. They found love for one another and a deeper love for Christ. He and Mary enjoyed the ministry and fellowship at Calvary Assembly of God Church.The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12, 2016 at Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home. Alumni will be in Emporia this weekend for their annual reunion, related tours and activities.Offering incentives to attract new businesses and industries is not a new idea. It’s been happening in Kansas and in Emporia since at least the late 1800s, and is one reason why this city for 90 years was home to two colleges.According to records, the idea of establishing a Synodical college in Kansas originated in 1877 with the Rev. Robert N. Overstreet, then-pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Emporia and chairman of the Education Committee of the Kansas Synod.Emporia, Salina, Peabody and Marion all were under consideration as possible sites.The City of Emporia responded to Overstreet’s plan by offering the Presbyterian Synod of Kansas a package deal — $35,000 and 38 acres of land — which the Synod accepted in 1882, and appointed Overstreet to be in charge of raising a $50,000 endowment fund, according to...
