Northampton counties, on Beacon Road in Melfa.Planning and fundraising for the memorial have been in the works for more than five years.The idea for a memorial was near to the heart of deceased Parksley Volunteer Fire Company member Jimmy Rowley, who died before he could see it completed.The flagpole at the monument is dedicated to his memory and was donated by Parksley Volunteer Fire Company."Jimmy was very instrumental in getting it started," said Accomack County Director of Public Safety Charles R. Pruitt.Rowley, a 44-year-member of Parksley Volunteer Fire Company who also served as chaplain and parlimentarian of the Delmarva Volunteer Firemen's Association, died at age 59 after an illness on Dec. 4, 2013.Rowley was known as the informal custodian of the history of volunteer firefighting on Virginia's Eastern Shore and was often consulted for his knowledge.His depth of knowledge of local firefighting history led to his passion for building a memorial to local volunteer firefighters and rescue workers who died in the line of duty, and he was a member of a committee set up to explore the idea.The memorial design subsequently was developed by that committee, which included members from Accomack and Northampton county volunteer fire departments and the Accomack County Department of Public Safety.Members of the initial committee were Pruitt, who replaced former Public Safety Director Jason Loftus when Loftus moved away from the area; Susan Leonard and Vince Savona, both also of the Accomack County Department of Public Safety; Jim LeCato of Northampton Fire and Rescue; Freddie Matthews of Parksley ...

S. Navy Surface Combat Systems Center at Wallops Island.Mayor James Eichelberger welcomed to town the large crowd, which included officials, residents, members of local veterans groups, and friends and family of Cpl. Jerry C.
