Monday, March 27, 2017Dec. 12, 2016, at her daughter’s home in Shelbyville, Kentucky.She was born March 29, 1918, in Murphysboro, to Andrew and Frances (Schiro) Calandro.Nettie married Ernest B. Boyer on Feb. 5, 1944, in Portsmouth, Virginia, while Ernest was in the Navy. He died on March 17, 1984. On April 16, 1988, she married Fred Graff and they were married until Fred’s death on June 5, 2005.Nettie was one of 10 children and attended St. Andrew’s grade school. At the age of 14 she went to work at the Brown Shoe Company. As a young lady, she and her sister, Josie, sang and yodeled on a Saturday afternoon radio program on WJPF in Herrin, while playing a guitar. She and Josie also played on the Brown Shoe softball team. After she was married, Nettie got a job as a chauffeur on the Navy Base in Portsmouth. When Ernie was stationed in New York, she worked at the Army base where she drove tractors and forklifts. She also worked at a shoe factory in New York.Upon returning to Murphysboro, Ernie and Nettie had four children. Nettie was a 4-H leader and coach for the 4-H softball team for her three daughters for 22 years. She drove neighborhood children to school and was active in the parent-teacher association as well as Boy Scouts and Little League for her son and bowled in a league for many years.Nettie was...
Monday, March 13, 2017Washington D.C. so much they stayed another 17 years, commuting between Maine and Washington. In 1982, Helen was made an “honorary submariner” and served as the sponsor at the launching of the USS Portsmouth in Groton, CT. In 2004 Helen and Jim moved back to Maine permanently where they continued to live in their home in Cumberland Foreside and then Ocean View At Falmouth which allowed them to spend wonderful times with their son John, his wife Corey and their children. After Jim’s death Helen moved to Darien, CT. to be near daughter Nancy, her husband Terry and their family. In these last years she relished her time with loving grandchildren and great grandchildren.Helen was pre-deceased by her husband, mother, father and brother, Robert Burns Poe, Jr. She is survived by son James P. Goodrich and wife Marilyn of St. Helen, OR; Dr. John F. Goodrich and wife Corey of Cumberland, ME and daughter Nancy G. McGraw and her husband Terry McGraw of Darien, CT. She also leaves grandchildren Shane, Chad and Travis Goodrich, Kate Day (Adam), Ryan Goodrich (Mary), Dary Goodrich (Cat), Whit McGraw (Camilla) and Megan Mozingo (Clayton) as well as 12 great grandchildren, brother David Poe and brother in-law William Goodrich. Helen kept a special lifelong friendship with Charlotte Hutton of Seattle, WA. The family would like to thank Helen’s wonderful caregivers in Connecticut, especially Ann, Brigitte, Charmaine, Christine, Keight and Woodland. The family would also like to thank Homepartners in Maine. They made the last years of her life full of laughter and loving care.A private family memorial service is planned at the Noroton Presbyterian Chapel on March, 26th in Darien, CT.
