Just south of Bethwood Avenue, the car lost control, spun counterclockwise and entered the northbound lane.A Dodge Dakota hit the passenger side of Courtney’s car. Both girls died at the scene.v vA Road Safety Audit the Florida Department of Transportation performed between Jan. 1, 2010, and Dec. 31, 2012, tallied 155 crashes on the roadway. In that time, car wrecks killed two people and injured 51.The audit also recorded three pedestrian and three bicyclist crashes, which resulted in two additional deaths. From the conclusion of that study to August 2013, three more people died in crashes on the road.The report pointed out ruts along the entire stretch of the road, which allows water to pool, a condition making it easier for drivers to hydroplane.There are also significant drop-offs on the sides of the road that can force drivers to over-correct and steer into oncoming traffic.A project to expand the road from two lanes to four with a median was scheduled to begin in 2006. Homes sitting on the road’s right of way were purchased and razed, but the plan was shelved until 2026 because funding isn’t available.New, larger signs with arrows alerting drivers to a curve in the road have replaced smaller signs. Monday, June 19, 2017Memorial Day ceremonies at two cemeteries on Monday, May 29.The Lynden Cemetery service will be at 10 a.m., Greenwood Cemetery’s on East Wiser Lake Road at 1:30 p.m. State Rep. Luanne Van Werven will be the main speaker at both.In the morning Boy Scout Troop 4028 and Cub Scout Pack 4032 members will have placed American flags on bronze medallions at gravesites in Lynden of more than 250 veterans interred including over 70 from the Civil War.American flags will line the main driveways and also along Front Street, put up at dawn and then retired at dusk.Lynden will have these participants: the Lynden Middle School Band, directed by Jarid Norman; Lonnie Rose, VFW post commander; Randall Marston, post chaplain; scouts posting colors for the national anthem; Eagle Scout candidate Kyle Glenn leading the pledge of allegiance. Monday, June 19, 2017He was always the life of the party and was loved by many.He is survived by his two children, Broderick Nelson Kinkead and wife Karen, and Edith Barbara Wise and husband David. He is also the proud grandfather of two grandchildren, Dr. Lucretia Marcelle Jones and Nicholas Arthur Kinkead. Villafranco was uninjured. Wise County Emergency Medical Services, Decatur police and fire departments, Wise County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Department of Public Safety, Air Evac Lifeteam 68, CareFlite and PHI Air Medical responded.FATAL WRECK UPDATE – The victim killed in an early morning Wednesday wreck near Alvord has been identified as a Bowie resident. The wreck happened just after 3 a.m. at the intersection of County Road 1596 and U.S. 81/287 near the Exxon truck stop on U.S. 81/287 north of Alvord. Texas Department of Public Safety Spokesman Sgt. Lonny Haschel said a pickup driven by Brayden Brown, 18, of Alvord was eastbound on County Road 1596 and pulled out into the southbound lanes of U.S. 81/287 to cross over and head north on U.S. 81/287. A southbound passenger car driven by Kathryn Joseph, 64, of Bowie struck the side of Brown’s truck. She died at the scene. Brown and several passengers in his truck were not injured, Haschel said.MORNING STORMS – Storms moved into Wise County this morning bringing heavy rainfall. Rainfall totals as of 7:45 a.m. included 1.5 inches in Greenwood, 1.02 in Bridgeport, 0.95 in Alvord, 0.88 in Decatur and 0.51 in Rhome. The rain is expected to end this morning before an afternoon high of 84.DRIVER’S EDUCATION – Decatur High School’s driver’s education class starts Monday at the McCarroll Middle School Multipurpose Building.
