Monday, June 19, 2017Van Werven to speak at Lynden, GreenwoodWHATCOM — Lynden VFW Post 9301 and its auxiliary, local officials, boy scouts and school bands will again present Memorial Day ceremonies at two cemeteries on Monday, May 29.The Lynden Cemetery service will be at 10 a.m., Greenwood Cemetery’s on East Wiser Lake Road at 1:30 p.m. State Rep. Luanne Van Werven will be the main speaker at both.In the morning Boy Scout Troop 4028 and Cub Scout Pack 4032 members will have placed American flags on bronze medallions at gravesites in Lynden of more than 250 veterans interred including over 70 from the Civil War.American flags will line the main driveways and also along Front Street, put up at dawn and then retired at dusk.Lynden will have these participants: the Lynden Middle School Band, directed by Jarid Norman; Lonnie Rose, VFW post commander; Randall Marston, post chaplain; scouts posting colors for the national anthem; Eagle Scout candidate Kyle Glenn leading the pledge of allegiance. Monday, April 03, 2017Jean (Japke) Laird, age 85, of Lynden, went home to her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, March 15, 2017. Born Nov. 3, 1931 to Clarence and Maaike (DeJong) DeLange, she was a lifetime Whatcom County resident. Jean attended Lynden schools and on Jan. 1, 1951 she married William “Bill” Laird in Lynden. Together they raised their family of six children. A people person, Jean enjoyed her years working and making friends at The Fairway Café and Cedar Springs Retreat Center. A dedicated wife, mother and grandmother, Jean’s greatest joy in life was her family, and her gracious hospitality was enjoyed by all who knew her. Jean was a member of New Life Fellowship Church. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Bill, and son Gary. Jean is survived by her children Greg (Carol) Laird of Camas, Washington, Galen (Candace) Laird of Lynden, Glenn (Jean) Laird of Bellingham, Guy (Janet) Laird of Lynden and Gina (Bruce) Bosch of Sumas; 21 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; and her brother, John DeLange of Quincy, ...
Monday, February 20, 2017Our beloved mother, Barbara Elizabeth Burrus, 91, of Ferndale, passed away peacefully on Feb. 2, 2017 in Lynden with her family at her bedside. Barbara was born Oct. 6, 1925 in Oakland, California, to Florence (Peterson) and Jack Harris. As a child Barbara lived in Seattle with her grandma and grandpa Peterson, graduating from Queen Ann High School in 1943. Barbara had many adventures as a child along the Seattle waterfront and would tell wonderful stories about these adventures. In 2007, Barbara went for a flight in a B-17 Flying Fortress at the age of 81. She was active in the Red Cross and VFW. Barbara married Roderic Cooper, a career navy man, and they had two children, Linda and Clell. In the early 1950s Barbara moved back to Seattle where she met and married her second husband, Harold Myer. They had two children, Jeff and Janice, and lived in Ballard up from the government locks. In the early 1960s, Barbara met and married Richard Burrus with whom she had a daughter Verdie. Residing in Sumas, they owned and operated the Maple Leaf I and II taverns before moving to Ferndale and ope...
