Rick Snyder is asking all flags be lowered to half-staff on all state buildings tomorrow, Friday, April 21, in remembrance of a National Guard sergeant who died last week.Brandon Cavanaugh of Farmington Hills, and formerly Bay City, died unexpectedly last week on Thursday, April 13, according to an obituary. He was 33 years old.Cavanaugh served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 2004-2009 and completed two tours of duty in Iraq in 2006 and 2009. He completed his Master's Degree in intelligence analysis from Michigan State University in 2010. Before that, he attended Park University and Northwood University. He's a 2002 graduate of Vassar High School.Cavanaugh joined the Michigan National Guard with a goal of becoming a commissioning officer in the military.He is survived by his wife, Amy, two daughters, Brandy and Abry, and mother and father, Patrick and Michelle. Virginia grew up in the Bronx and attended Cornell University, where she majored in chemistry in 1950. She attended graduate school in chemistry at Harvard University and then worked in industrial chemistry laboratories in Springfield, MA and Hartford for several years. She married her husband, the late William Maine, in 1953. Together, they lived in West Hartford and Farmington, where they raised four children. Virginia was active in volunteer work through her church, and worked for a time as a literacy volunteer. An avid reader of history and biography, she also loved travel, food and wine, gardening and bird watching.Virginia was predeceased by her husband of 39 years, Bill Maine, in 1992.
